Unknown Plant Looks Like A Type Of Rheum

rheumAsk the Expert: Unknown plant
I live in Maine and I am on a wooded lot, not much sun and lot of pine trees. I have pretty much given up trying to grow anything. This plant appeared this year. This is one of the only plants that are in my garden. It has square stocks and maple like leaves. Can you identify it?  Scott

It looks like something from the Rheum genus – rhubarb.  However, at this point I can’t be sure. It could also be a type of Gunnera.  I’m not sure what part of Maine you live in but you the Maine Extension Service might be able to identify it  The extention service in Arkansas is very helpful with local plant identification. I’m sure the Maine Extension Service would be as well.  I will forward the picture to the extention to see what they think.  Maybe we will know something soon.

  1. The plant in the photo is Urtica dioica, “Stinging Nettle.” If you grab the stem and leaves to pull it, you’ll likely feel a stinging sensation in your fingers; there are small hairs on the leaves (especially the undersides) and the stems that have glands containing an irritant; when these break, the histamine is released, causing the stinging sensation. Pulling this weed in early spring may cause fewer problems, as the stinging hairs are more numerous later in the season.

Most likely Cranesbill, or Wild Geranium such as Johnson Blue or Birch’s Double (there are many different kinds besides the two I named). They usually bloom in May/June. There are loads of them in my garden in Maine. Some kinds grow from a surface rhizome.

Definitely not rhubarb, and the “fur” on nettles doesn’t show in the picture.

  3. Did you ever get this identified? It’s definitely NOT stinging nettle. I have that everywhere and I also have this and they are two very different plants. I would agree it looks like geranium from the leaves but I’m also having an impossible time identifying it. it grows along the edge of my yard on the woods edge and I don’t recall its flowers from last year. It smells gross though, like a weed.
