What Type Of Rose Is This From Italy

Ask the Expert: What type of Rose is this?
We found this rose on our travels through Italy. See the pictures attached. It looks like a Grandiflora, with a yellow bud. The bud turns into pink and rose.

What type of rose is it and will it survive in Zone 5 or 6 (Southern Ontario)?

And even better, where can I get one?

Sonja

Flower Shop Network‘s Plant Expert Replay: Grandiflora roses are a cross between a hybrid tea and a floribunda. Their flowers grow in clusters and the plant is usually tall. Both of these qualification seem to be present in the rose in question. Since I am not an expert  rosarian, I can not say with certainty which grandiflora it is.

However, I can tell you that there are many rose varietiesthat start out in one color in bud form and mature to another color. A few of those varieities are Dream Come True, Heart o’ Gold, Rio Samba and Joesph’s Coat. If you want a rose that closley resembles the one in the picture I would choose Dream Come True. It is a grandiflora rose that is hardy to zone 5. The best place to get one is at your local garden center & nursery. These professionals will not only have the roses, but will explain what is needed to make them grow successfully in your area.

Why Does My Peace Lily Have Yellow Leaves

Ask the Expert: Peace lily lower leaves turn yellow and then die?
I repotted my peace lily about 18 mos. ago. The lower leaves turn yellow and then die. At first I thought it was just the shock, but it continues to lose leaves. It was a huge plant and now is looking rather pathetic. HELP!!! I love this plant. It is in a south window, but gets limited direct sunlight. I have it in a self-watering pot. Any ideas would be appreciated. Linda

Flower Shop Network‘s Plant Expert Rely: This peace lily problem is directly related to a water issue. Normally, I would assume too much water. With self-watering pots it is hard to tell. It could be getting too much or not enough.

Spathiphyllum clevelandii - Peace Lily

Peace Lily

Another issue could be that the plant was planted too deep when re-potted. The top of the root in the old pot should have been the top of the root ball in the new pot.

In other words, you should not have added any soil on top of the plant. If you think you place the plant deeper than it was, you might need to raise it up. This would be a good time to see if the roots are rotting.

Once you have taken care of the repotting issues, start caring for your plant by creating a humid environment. Mist the air around the plant with tepid water every day or at least every other day. Then make sure the soil is evenly moist (a self watering pot may not be the best for keeping the soil evenly moist.)

Usually a once a week watering will keep the soil moist but not soggy. If your plant is in really low light levels, you may be able to water your plant every other week instead.

Once you have evened out the water issue the plant should make of full come back.

California Vine With Small White Flowers

Coast Wild Cucumber

Vine and prickly seed pod

Marah fabaceus Seed Pod

Flower Shop Network‘s Plant Expert:
It looks like a member of the wild cucumber family which is the Marah genus.

I think this particular plant is a Marah fabaceus. It is commonly called California manroot, Coast wild cucumber, Manroot, wild cucumber and bigroot. The plant is found throughout California. Although the Marah genus can be found in various parts of the country, the Marah fabaceus is endemic (limited) to California alone.

It is consider a perennial vine and a herb.  The prickly fruit may resemble cucumbers, but is not edible. It has a very bitter taste.

Native Californians used this fruit medicinally. The Kumeyaay people use the crushed tubers of this plant to aid in fishing. They throw the crushed tubers in the water to immobilize the fish.

What This Variegated Plant?

Ask the Expert: What type of plant is this and what is its name? I want to know how to care for this plant, but do not know what it is. Darren

Flower Shop Network Plant Expert Reply: I believe what you have is a Ficus elastica ‘Variegata’. The Genus Ficus has over 800 different species. Ficus in the elastica species are commonly known as India rubber fig, India rubber tree or rubber plant.

The Ficus elastica ‘Variegata’ is often confused with the Ficus benjaminia. They can be distinguish from one another by the thickness of the leaves. The elastica has thicker more upright leaves. Most types of ficus including this one can produce a sap that will cause mild stomach upset if ingested. The sap can also cause skin irritation. Despite these issue Ficus are one of the most commonly known Ficus benjamina ‘Variegata.

Rubber Plants (Ficus elastica) requires a very moist but well-drained environment, a good balance of light and shade, and a varying fertilizer regimen over the course of its life.

You may want to read more detailed care instructions for Ficus Elastica. The care instructions will be below the picture on our rubber plant basket page.

Help! My Peace Lily Has Caterpillars

Ask The Expert: I have two peace lillies. I had the two of them sitting in my kitchen sink to spray the leaves today. I noticed lots of insects that look like baby caterpilars…brown or black in color. What can I do about them, and could that be why the plant doesn’t seem to be growing? Lisa

Flower Shop Network Plant Expert Reply:
You can do one of two things: pick off the caterpillars or spray them with an insecticide. I use the Fertilome Red Spider and Mite spray. It Kills Red Spiders Mites, Two Spotted Spider Mites, Whiteflies, Mealybugs, Aphids, Thrips and Scale Crawlers on house plants and is safe to use on peace lilies and a multitude of other houseplants. It comes in a ready to use (rtu) form, so all you have to do is spray it on the plant. You can pick this product up at any local garden center. If they don’t have the Fertilome brand ask the nursery professional what they use.

As for the stunted growth of your Peace lily (Spathiphyllum clevelandii), you may need to fertilize the plants. You can use a water soluble fertilizer once a month. It is best to use a balanced fertilizer – one in which the N, P, and K all have the same ratio like 10-10-10 or 20-20-20. If you can’t find a balanced fertilizer try one in which the number are as close as possible like 9-8-5.

Make sure you are keeping your peace lily evenly moist and that it has good drainage. Keeping your moisture level correct is a big part of keeping a peace lily healthy.

What Are These Pink Flowers From Pikes Place Market

Pink DahliaAsk the Expert: What kind of flower is this?

I saw this flower at the Seattle Pike Place Market but I forgot to ask what kind of flower it is?

The main color is a light pink with a yellow center and yellow on the tips.

Thanks for any help! Adam Lowe

Flower Shop Network Plant Expert Reply:I believe what you have is a type of Dahlia. This genus has about 30 different species and a variety of different flower forms: formal decorative, informal decorative, semi-cactus, straight cactus, laciniated, ball, waterlily, anemone, collarette, orchid and single. I am guessing that your Dahlias are informal decorative.

Depending on the form, some species have very open bloom with few petals –  while other species have tight blooms with an abundance of  petals.  Dahlias also come in a variety of colors: red, orange, yellow, pink, bi-color, purple, burgundy and white.

Dahlias bloom in mid-summer and are perennial in zone 9-11.  However, the tubers can be lifted in the winter and replanted in the spring in zones that are too cold.

Your local florist probably uses Dahlias in many of their flower arrangements.

How To Remove Pollen From Clothing

Lily With PollenIn every Flower Shop Network‘s monthly newsletter, we include a Quick Flower Care Tip. This month’s was:

Have you ever brushed up against a lily and gotten pollen all over your favorite shirt? To avoid the dreaded pollen catastrophe make sure you remove the pollen.

When your lily bloom opens wide enough, take a soft paper towel and gently pop the anther (pollen) off of the filament. Then you can dispose of the pollen and avoid the messy pollen issue.

After reading our Quick Flower Care Tip, Mary Williams at Ideal Floral and Gifts in Lyons, Ga sent us a great way to remove pollen from clothing.

Just read your info on lily pollen. I have found that if you do indeed get the pollen on you or your clothes you need to lift it off with tape. Any kind will do. This surely has saved a lot of ruined clothes for my customers!

Mary, thank you for such a useful tip. I will be sure to remember it the next time I pick lilies from my garden. I seem to get get pollen all over me every time I pick my lilies.

If anyone else has a secret way to remove pollen from clothing, please share you tips with us.

Caring For Lucky Bamboo

Ask the Expert: Lucky Bamboo
I have a small lucky bamboo plant. I have only had this a few weeks, but a few of the leaves are turing yellow. Have I watered it too much or does it need to be out of the indirect light for a while? How often are you to water it, I use filtered water, and are you suppose to be able to see the water over the stones? Thank you! Jo Reyerson

Flower Shop Network Plant Expert Reply:

When caring for lucky bamboo remember this – lucky bamboo isn’t really a bamboo. It is actually a Dracaena sanderiana. As a result the plant needs to be placed somewhere it will not be in direct light, it will not get too dry or too cold.

I have found lucky bamboo will tolerate a wide range of living conditions if you follow a few suggestions:

  • Keep away from air vents. Don’t let the air blow directly on to the plant.
  • Don’t use tap water. It contains fluoride and chlorine which are harmful to lucky bamboo. Instead use distilled or filtered water or let you tap water rest in an open container for 24hrs before use – this will enable the fluoride and chlorine to evaporate.
  • Don’t over fertilize. This plant can go years without fertilizer. However, if the plant becomes spindly or pale, you can fertilize the lucky bamboo with a light solution of water-soluble fertilizer every 3mos.
  • Don’t place on a window sill that receives strong light.  Indirect light is better for lucky bamboo. It grows naturally in dense shade under a thick rainforest canopy.
  • Mist the air around your plant occasionally.
  • Try to keep your water level constant. Depending on the container, you will need to keep the rocks holding the lucky bamboo covered.

Now as for the leaves turning yellow there are usually two causes: too much light or too much fertilizer. I suspect yours has gotten too much light. If this is possible, move it a little farther from your light source and the new leaves should be ok.

Please Idenitify This Perennial Found In Connecticut

Hibiscus moscheuto - Swamp Rose-mallow

Ask the Expert: Can you ID this plant?
My niece and I were taking a walk and saw several of these plants, along with black-eyed Susan’s planted around a mailbox. This was in Connecticut, August 1st, if that helps. The yard had many perennials that I was familiar with, but I have no idea what this one is–not even sure if it’s a perennial. Thanks for your help! Mary Ellen

Flower Shop Network’s Plant Expert Reply:

I believe the plant is a Hibiscus moscheutos (Swamp Rose-mallow). It usually blooms July thru September with pink or white blooms (occasionally with red centers). It can grow 4 to 7′ in height and the blooms can be 4 to 7″ across.

Humidity Key Component When Caring For Anthurium

Ask the Expert: caring for Anthurium
I have a healthy plant with blooms. I water regularly and have indirect light. The new blooms come up brown and wilted. What can I do to change this. I live in Utah, a pretty dry climate. thanks JoAnne

Flower Shop Network Plant Expert Reply:

Humidity is an important factor when caring for Anthurium. So, you need to create a more humid environment. Mist your Anthurium with luke-warm water every few days or place it in a naturally humid environment like a bathroom or kitchen.
