Best 5 Reasons To Send Flowers In July

Red White and True BlueBlue skies, white clouds, and red hot grills mean July has started off right this year. With the height of the hot summer season rolling in, remember to refresh with flowers! There are so many fantastic hot-weather blooms available and here are some great reasons to send summer joy:

#1 – Independence Day – July 4th

It’s America’s birthday and time to celebrate! Along with lemonade, homemade ice cream, and anything barbecued, flowers are a sparkling addition to every party or gathering. An arrangement in the middle of the table makes your whole event more festive without much effort at all.

Flowers can serve as a great reminder of the reason we don the white, red, and blue. Our nation battled for its independence and won! Don’t these lilies, mums, and gladiolas look like perfect flower fireworks?

#2 – Show Your Summer Love

Do you have a summer sweetheart? Sending flowers can make a big impression in a budding relationship. Maybe you want to rekindle the affection of your long-time partner? Remind her than your love is in full bloom with a gorgeous arrangement packed with the very best the season has to offer. The summer growing season has so many bright exciting colors, textures, and fragrances to choose from.
To take advantage of seasonal flowers, ask for combinations of these sun-loving varieties:

Citrus Zest

#3 – Parents’ Day – July 28th

Sure, mom and dad get their own individual day in spring, but Parents’ Day honors them both. Celebrated on the fourth Sunday of July, this relatively new national holiday started in 1994 by President Bill Clinton for “recognizing, uplifting, and supporting the role of parents in the rearing of children.”

It is also quickly becoming a favorite day for families celebrating non-traditional parents because it focuses more on the team effort of parenthood instead of singling out only mothers or fathers. Show your parents they raised you right! Treat them to an arrangement bursting with color or a fruit basket to enjoy while they sip iced tea on the porch.

#4 – July Birthdays

Have family or friends with a upcoming July birthday? Show them how much you care with a lovely arrangement. Make it more personal by ordering their favorite color. Not sure what color would be a hit? Select the traditional July birth flower – consolida. Sometimes called larkspur, this flower symbolizes a strong bond of love, is very closely related to delphinium, and highlights how special this month is to your recipient.

Flower Suggestions For All Types of Dads

The Sports Fan
Does a limited edition jersey constitute dressing up for your dad? Ask your flower shop to represent his favorite team colors. Or start with some bright sunflowers and have the florist work in packaged sunflower seeds for a perfect pre-game snack. Don’t be surprised if he can’t stop singing “Take Me Out to the Ballgame.”

Great Outdoorsman
Whether it is fishing, hiking, or gardening, your father spends his time out in the elements. An arrangement that features some local flora is a great idea. Just ask your florist what is common in the area. Have earth-toned elements like tall cattails, marsh reeds, and unusual seed pods mixed in and this gift will have your dad dreaming of the sun, wind, and water he loves.

Mr. Golf
If “tee time” involves a bag of clubs for your pop, ask your florist if they have anything special for golf fanatics. Chances are they do. Golf inspired creations can be as simple as a design that works in some new tees to adding some fun color to a bucket of golf balls. This reminder at the office will immediately take dad right to that 18th hole. [Read more…]

Sweet Florals – FSN Member Lori Himes Featured in Florist Review!

Lori Himes featured in Florist ReviewCongratulations to Lori Himes, AIFD of A’Bloom LTD for her great floral designs recently selected for “Best Cake Decor” in the Picture Perfect Wedding Contest in the Florist Review – April Issue 2013.

Lori contributed floral designs for a wedding last fall at The Lodge at Blue Ridge Summit in Walkersville, Maryland, and was recognized for her excellent work when incorporating flowers into the wedding cake. She took a moment from the busy Mother’s Day order rush to talk to me about her featured flowers.

“I’ve known the bride and her family for a long time. She was very open to our ideas. When given that opportunity we like to do more of a natural style that goes with the season. Autumn colors are my favorite and I love to use what is available in this area like bittersweet vine. You have to know where to find it. We have a secret spot where we go collect our own so don’t tell anyone where it is. You have to be sure and get it before the first frost.”

The winning cake decor consisted of fresh ‘Orange Unique’ roses, red and orange spray roses, mixed spray chrysanthemums, sunflowers and miniature dahlias and hypericum placed directly on the icing.

The autumn colors beautifully set off all 3 layers of decadent white cake. Placed in front of a large mirror in the reception area, this towering delight was nestled on a tabled with a fabulous scatter of preserved oak leaves, colorful flower petals, and Lori’s own secret store of bittersweet vine.

Salute The Red White & Blue With Flowers!

Honor your Veterans in May

May is definitely the month for honoring American military heros. With 2 holidays that focus on those that serve our country, you have twice the opportunity to show your love for the red, white and blue this month. Send fresh flowers to service members and their families to express your appreciation of their hard work and sacrifice.

Armed Forces Day  – May 18thRed White and Beautiful

In the United States, Armed Forces Day is celebrated on the third Saturday in May. President Harry S. Truman led the effort to establish a single holiday for citizens to come together and support of our country’s soldiers.

In 1949, Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced the creation of an Armed Forces Day to replace separate Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force Days. This decision came after the consolidation of the 5 branches of military services in the U.S. Department of Defense.

Memorial Day – May 27th

Memorial Day is a federal holiday that falls on the last Monday in May.  It is observed as a day for remembering the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. Military. Formerly known as Decoration Day, the holiday began after the Civil War to commemorate the Confederate and Union soldiers who died in battle.

By the 20th century Memorial Day came to honor all Americans who have died in all wars. Take this time to honor family members and loved ones who have fallen by placing patriotic tribute flowers at their final resting place.

What About Veterans?

As Armed Forces Day celebrates active military and Memorial Day honors the fallen, those that have retired from the military have their own special day to be remembered as well. Veteran’s Day is November 11th.

This month, take time to remember that the great strength of our county comes from the collective efforts of military men and women.
Give thanks to our military members for their patriotic service and honor them with beautiful flowers from a real local florist.

Mom Moments: Bringing Memories To Life

In every family there are those stories, you know exactly the ones I’m talking about. I like to call these Mom Moments. Someone new comes to a family gathering and before you know it, your sibling is loudly regaling them about that none-to-flattering time you… And a cut-off never seems to work. The story gets told. Faces turn red, and laughs ring out. You might be safe after that point as long as no one scrambles for the photo album. There are other stories we often share. Everyone has memorable funny or sweet stories to tell about their mothers.

With Mother’s Day coming up, take time to recall a mom moment. Maybe it was the time your mother took you to pick flowers when you were young, or taught you to whistle. How she always sings along with the radio even if she doesn’t know all the words. Sometimes, our mothers have the seemingly supernatural way of knowing when we are sick or need a care package at college. Being able to make a grilled cheese sandwich just the way you like it is a job skill worthy of a resume.

Our mothers are amazing! Celebrate by showing your mom how special she is.
