How Local Florists Made Valentines Day A Success

Valentines Day is truly one of the biggest holidays of the year for florists, and this year’s has come and gone with great success. We are so proud to see more people turning to their real local florist when they need flowers, and even more proud of how well these florists were able to take care of their customers with good service and quality products.

On the day after Valentines Day, we asked florists to share their favorite memories of the holiday and were answered with overwhelming response. As you are reading these, consider how much these florists care for each and every customer.

My favourite customer of the day happened to be one of my last. 2 little boys about 12 and 9 came in and dumped a bunch of change on my counter, and asked “What can we get for this for our step mom?” I made sure they left with a lovely bunch of flowers that had her favourite colour in it and enough left over for a chocolate bar each. Its amazing how far 1 .79 goes!

Best part of Valentine’s Day today was delivering an arrangement to a daughter from her Dad. Her Dad passed away two days ago. It brought tears to her and our eyes.

Enchanted Valentines

From recipient of flowers to florist: “My husband Troy Dill was your mailman for a long time and was killed back in July. He used you to make all our flower arrangements. Thank you Emily for creating the flower arrangements that he would have picked out for his 3 girls this morning. You were a blessing to wake up to!

Glendale Flowers & Gifts, Glendale AZ

We made a small, hand-tied bouquet of 4 roses and some babies breath, cut short and taped tightly for our landscaper… This is the 2nd year we had to make his wife’s roses in this fashion, for they now grace her crypt at the mausoleum. Previously, she got a standard dozen, but the little cup on the wall only holds a tiny handful of flowers. As I carefully made the flowers look as pretty as possible, given the circumstances, the man stood before me sobbing genuine tears of loss. How lucky was he to have loved someone this much? How lucky was I to get to make his love gift?

2012 Pantone Color of the Year – Tangerine Tango

Pantone 2012 Color of the Year
Pantone has just announced the color of the year for 2012, Tangerine Tango! What an exciting color to feature for the new year.

“Sophisticated but at the same time dramatic and seductive, Tangerine Tango is an orange with a lot of depth to it,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute®. “Reminiscent of the radiant shadings of a sunset, Tangerine Tango marries the vivaciousness and adrenaline rush of red with the friendliness and warmth of yellow, to form a high-visibility, magnetic hue that emanates heat and energy.” Over the past several years, orange has grown in popularity and acceptance among designers and consumers alike. A provocative attention-getter, Tangerine Tango is especially appealing in men’s and women’s fashion.

This color works well because of it’s versatility for both men and women. Dress it up for an exotic look, but can also work for a casual, friendly design. Tangerine Tango is full of energy just waiting to perk up your flower arrangements.

Celebrate this beautiful color choice with flowers!

Here are our favorite arrangements that use this hot color of the year: [Read more…]

Anthuriums & Succulents In New Colors To Dye For

Something Old, Something New…

While going through my emails, I found something NEW I just had to share! In GrowerTalks‘ newsletter, they talk about a European company that has developed a way to dye Anthuriums blue, much like the way they dye the new Blue Mystique orchids. It’s a complicated process, but the results are phenomenal!

Blue Anthurium

The Blue Anthurium

As you can see, the blue is bright and vivid. This new, blue anthurium is called Princess Alexia Blue and is from the Dutch company, Rijnplant. They also offer a yellow one called Princess Alexia Yellow. From their website (and after translating) Rijnplant explains, “The plant is as naturally painted as possible, the dye leaves via root pressure and the assimilative capacity of the leaf. While I couldn’t find this for sale to florists YET, it’s definitely something to keep an eye out for.

EcheveriaColored Succulents

Another cool dyed product to look out for is the colorful new Echeverias. According to GrowerTalks’ newsletter, “One trend that’s been going on [in Europe] for years and continues strong is painting and glittering echeveria. They were everywhere, in every color. Big sellers? Heck, yeah!” [Read more…]

Local Florists Promote Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Pink Roses For The CureBreast Cancer Awareness Month is something florists do not take lightly. Many go above and beyond to do their part to raise awareness of this disease in their own creative ways.

Here are just a few of the ways florists all across the nation are helping out:

  • Bayberries Flowers & Gifts in Caldwell Idaho is giving $5.00 to their local breast cancer screening center for every “pink” arrangement ordered through the 20th of October.
  • Clark Flower & Gift Shop in Clark, SD is doing a ‘”Bra”vo For A Cure’ Decorated Bra Contest during the month of October for Breast Cancer Awareness. So far, they’ve got 32 entries, and have them displayed in the front window of their store. (photo below)

We have having a People’s Choice vote during October for the winning entry with a $1 donation per vote. Proceeds will be donated to the local Relay For Life. Also, we took photos of all our entries & put a photo album on our Facebook page. The entry that gets the most likes during October will win a prize.

We also have pink rose specials for the month, & are donating $1 for each pink rose sold to our local Relay For Life. We are also giving out [FSN’s] Think Pink flyer to customers during October. It’s fun to watch people looking at our window display; laughing and having fun with it. We got so many cute entries. The decorated bras will be donated for an auction to be held later to benefit our local Relay For Life

Florist Stories: Memories From Design Competitions

We are excited to share with you our very first Florist Story submitted by Lori Mudge of De’Vine Floral Design & Gifts in Granville, IL.

For the past 3 years, Lori and her team at De’Vine Floral Design & Gifts have taken the floral design contest at Bonnett’s Wholesale’s by storm.

Lori tells us all about it here:

“Floral supplier, Bonnett’s Wholesale in Milan, IL always has there annual open house in August. They host a big design contest for all of their mid-west customers, guest designers and floral professionals, which we enter every year.

Bonnett’s Design Contest has three design categories to enter:

  • Anything Goes (anything you want in fresh, silk or whatever, with a wholesale price of $50.00)
  • Corsage + Boutonniere
  • Surprise Box

Florists are able to enter all three categories. The winner of the competition is determined by votes from Bonnett’s staff, as well as florists and industry professionals from all across the mid-west. I feel it is more of an honor to win here because it is judged by florists from Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Iowa.”

Lori shared these photos with us of her winning entries for the past 3 years in a row:

The first year, Lori received two 1st place awards in the Anything Goes and Corsage + Boutonniere categories. Her out-of-the-box designs set her apart from her competition.

Florida Ferns Take A Blow, But A-Okay For V-Day

Florida Fern CropWith record lows in December and over 18 days of subfreezing temperatures, it’s no wonder Florida’s fern crop has taken a blow. The cold temperatures have also devastated 9,000 acres of vegetable crops (squash, peppers, cucumber, and others) causing an estimated $273 million in damage, according to Florida’s Agricultural Department.

However, Jana Register of FernTrust, a cooperative of Florida fern growers, says the Valentines Day crop is A-Okay! The growers used a process called icing to keep the ferns alive. They coat the ferns in water to build up a layer of ice around them. This will keep the plants at freezing temperatures and shield them from the extreme cold outside. The problem is the weight of the ice and the harsh winds. It has been reported that an estimated 50-70% of the young fern crop was damaged. Leatherleaf ferns take to the icing very well, but you may see shortages of Asparagus plumosa and Ssprengeri.

Luckily, the Valentines Day fern crop was mature enough to handle the rough conditions and will be just fine come February. It’s the period just after Valentines Day you might see some shortages. Easter falls late this year, but it’s less than 3 weeks away from Mother’s Day. It will be a hectic early year, but FernTrust is optimistic.

Consumers: Order Valentines Day flowers early to ensure you get the best and freshest foliage available. If ferns are unavailable to your local florist, there are tons of other great filler foliages they will use to keep your Valentines Day flowers looking fantastic!
