Charlotte Florist Dazzles Christmas Parties With Fresh Flowers

Joel from Flowers PlusThis article was contributed by guest author, Joel Houston with the help of Micheal Mancinelli, from Flowers Plus in Charlotte NC. Charlotte is a very traditional city, and the wave of contemporary elegance is just starting to catch on. Flowers Plus is on the foreground of this movement, so Flower Shop Network invited them to share their holiday experiences with us.

This season brings lots of holiday parties, and flowers certainly play a very special role. At Flowers Plus, we couldn’t be more excited. This year, we have had the opportunity to showcase our design work, along with other top florists in Charlotte NC, at Holiday House 2010 which benefits local medical charities.

We were selected for the prominent position of the upstairs foyer, which featured a sixteen foot wide French doorway that leads to the main balcony, located on the front of the home. We chose to place the main Christmas tree for the family in this room.

The theme for this holiday event was “Dazzling“, and we dazzled with a Christmas tree completely decorated with fresh flowers. Everyone was talking about how beautiful and different it was to have the tree decorated with fresh flowers. It was all the rage!

Fresh Flower Christmas Tree Decorations

This year, one of the hottest Christmas colors we’ve seen is a vivid, apple green. To bring out this color, we used beautiful Dendrobium orchid sprays, with fragrant ‘Casa Blanca’ lilies, star-of-Bethlehem, hot-pink heather and blushing, ‘Porcelina’ roses. We also used these in a large, holiday floral arrangement at the top of the stairs to compliment the tree.

The trend at Flowers Plus this year is refined elegance — bold, monochromatic flower arrangements that are very lush and full in contemporary containers. However, traditional Christmas floral designs with our special touch, are always available as well. We offer a wide variety of fresh flowers and evergreens. Flowers Plus LogoBold Amaryllis in white, red and crimson, fragrant paper whites, ‘Casa Blanca’ lilies, bells-of-Ireland, ‘Charlotte’ roses, star-of-Bethlehem, calla lilies and orchids are just a few of the many varieties we offer here at our Charlotte flower shop to make your holiday season special.

When using high-end products, it sets an elegant tone that so many look forward to this time of year, and it really just makes everyone feel special. Flowers are a luxury and allow each person to make a luxurious statement about themselves and their individual style.

Whether you’re in Charlotte, or as far away as Butte, Montana, elegant floral arrangements make the perfect accompaniment to your holiday decor.

Happy Holiday’s to everyone from the Staff at Flowers Plus.

The Modern Flower Shop: Bay Bouquet

Last week, I was able to interview Tony Swick, from Bay Bouquet in Tampa, about their recent relocation to a larger, more urban-style store. The building boasts a beautiful color scheme: neutral grays and blues that complement Bay Bouquet’s company brand colors. “Inside the building is very urban,” Tony says, “Brand color is a feature of our building as well as our logo. We wanted to focus on our visibility in a clean, but also visually pleasing way.” The outside of the building is an eye-catching, vibrant blue — the same blue used in their logo. However, inside the shop is very warm and inviting; comfortable for all age groups. Tony says they, “Didn’t want to overwhelm our customers with anything, except with our logo and name.”

One step inside this store and you will notice it’s unlike any flower shop you’ve ever seen. There is a high level of comfort: couch, seating area, refreshments. The store has a very urban spa-like feeling. This definitely isn’t your grandma’s flower shop, and will give Bay Bouquet a big step ahead in attracting younger clients. The store features a nice, open work space for easy designing, as well as volume designing. There is a private area for bridal consultation, expanding their opportunity to work with brides in a more intimate setting.

Bay Bouquet’s modern look is not the only thing that sets them apart as a fresh alternative to clients seeking the best in floral design. Tony strongly believes that, “A focus on what you do best is the key to success.” Bay Bouquet is getting to the roots of the floral industry, “We want to do what we do best, and that’s flowers and floral designs.” Tony does not keep anything that has to be stocked and in rotation, and doesn’t focus on gift lines.

“We do quality, artful floral design, for every order. No matter what the order, or how much.” Tony and his team don’t believe in pre-making arrangements. Each design is made specifically for the client: their colors, styles, occasion and, of course, budget. Bay Bouquet’s focus is on quality and service. “No matter what your volume is, make every single design your most important.”

“When people go to a flower shop, they go for flowers, and that’s what we do — flowers.”

With his innovation, it’s no wonder Anthony Swick is being inducted into the American Institute of Floral Design (AIFD) in San Fransisco this March. It is a high honor for any florist. Congratulations Tony, from all of us at FSN!

Also! Bay Bouquet was one of the first to make the switch to our premium websites because they could brand it with their company’s colors. Check out their new website’s sleek new look here!

Superman Florist Of The Year: Bob Buettner

Bob Buettner, Connecticut Florist of the Year

Bob Buettner from Paul Buettner Florist Inc. was recently named 2010 Connecticut Florist of the Year, but after our recent conversation, I think he should be titled, Superman Florist of the Year. He has done more in the past year than most people accomplish in 10! Congratulations Bob. No one deserves this honor more than you!

This award is given for more than just being an accomplished florist, it’s about all of the contributions made on both a local and state level. Bob is truly a man who goes above and beyond his call of duty.Working as a florist is great, but Bob’s true passion is helping others in need. He does an incredible job of merging his two loves.

Bob helps organize a special flowers for kids program in his community, where he shows children how to make bouquets. Each kid gets their own flowers to arrange and by the end of the day, they have their own bouquet to take home. There is also a story that goes along with it about growing flowers. What a great way to get kids interested in plants and flowers!

Flowers For Kids Program

Bob Buettner also has a big heart for charity. He sponsors a booth at the Connecticut Women’s Health and Wellness Expo where this year they helped raise $1,400 in 1½ days for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Awareness Foundation. (Last year they raised $1,200!)

For Christmas, Bob helps his team decorate childrens’ hospitals to, as Bob puts it, “bring [the children] a little bit of brightness and cheer.” He works with Connecticut Children’s Medical Center, Bridgeport Hospital, Yale-New Haven Children’s Hospital, and others. Each hospital gets it’s own theme and they decorate multiple floors. Bob says they start planning in August and begin decorating right after Thanksgiving. What an amazing effort to bring joy to the lives of sick children who are stuck in the hospital for Christmas.

In February, Bob helps out at the Connecticut Flower Show. Here, he raises money for charity by doing multiple flower arranging demonstrations through the event.

Flower Arranging Demonstration

He also plays a vital role in the North East Floral Expo in March as trade fair chairman. Bob spends much of his time working closely with the Connecticut Florist Association. He is proud to be on their board of directors and is also marketing chairman. Buettner does as much as he can to proactively promote his industry.

Somehow, Bob also finds the time to teach floral design at the Manchester Community College.

Scuba Diving For Kids With Terminal Illnesses “One other project that is dear to my heart,” is surprisingly his role as a scuba instructor. For the past 22 years, Bob Buettner has spent his summers teaching scuba lessons to kids with terminal illnesses. These are kids who otherwise would never have the chance to be a part of something like this. It is clear Bob is wholeheartedly dedicated to helping others and is truly an inspiration to us all.

Surprised by his overwhelming selflessness, I asked “When do you have time to be a florist?!” He responded, “There’s always time to do new things that are worth while. All of these projects are very worth while. I have a lot of good help behind me. My committees work very hard and we all support each other.”

Bob Buettner is a 2nd generation florist who’s been in the business for over 50 years. His daughter (3rd gen) is now the shop manager and is slowly taking over his day-to-day practice. He says proudly that she is an excellent designer. When I asked about his family business, he said, “It’s nice to have family, because we all work so closely together. Sometimes there’s a problem at family dinners. We all start talking about business and things like that. It’s a very personal business and we pride ourselves on service.”

“I’m 66 years old and people keep asking me, ‘When are you going to retire?’ I will retire the day I don’t want to come to work. I enjoy the business. I keep telling people, ‘Grumpy people don’t buy flowers.’ It’s not always a happy situation; obviously we deal with a lot of people that have had death in the family, but we can give them a little peace and a little bit of beauty and know that we have brought a smile into their lives.”

The Connecticut Florist Association could not have picked a better choice for the 2010 Florist of the Year. Thanks Bob for being such an inspiration to us all.

Interview With Local Florist & Recent AIFD Inductee, Janet Frye

Interview With Local Asheville NC Florist, Janet Frye

On our recent trip to Boston for the American Institute of Floral Design or AIFD’s National Symposium, I ran into one of our fabulous Flower Shop Network Members, Janet Frye of Enchanted Florist in Ashville NC.

Janet was kind enough to give Flower Shop Network an interview a few hours before being inducted into the prestigious AIFD program. She talks about her struggles along the way and the joy of finally accomplishing a life-long goal. Janet also discusses honoring her heritage by wearing handmade Native American regalia.

What a night it was, the theme was Retro Rebellion, the band was playing groovy music, and everyone was on the dance floor discoing it up! Janet looked marvelous in her handmade, buckskin garb. I couldn’t resist asking her into the hall for a great shot (in the light) of her outfit! Just after the last clip was taken, we hit the dance floor! Dancing to disco with Janet in her commemorative, ancestral vestments is definitely a memory I’ll never, ever forget. Thanks again, Janet!

…and Congratulations! You deserve it!

What To Do When Tips OF Peace Lilies Turn Brown

Ask the Expert: Tips of the Peace Lily plant

What do you do when the tips and the sides of the leaves of the Peace Lily plant start turning brown. I have a huge plant in the office and so far it is doing extremely well but the tips of the leaves are turning brown right at the very point.

Thank you for any help you can send my way. Shell

Flower Shop Network Plant Expert Reply:
You can trim the brown tips and sides off the leaves. What is more important is to figure out why the leaves are turning brown in the first place. What and sunlight are the major causes of browning in Spathiphyllum (peace lily) leaves. Make sure the plant is staying evenly moist and that sunlight is not beating directly down on the leaves. I would alos check for any signs of insects. Once you correct the problem the leaves should stop turning brown.
