Florist Stories: First Day, 100 Roses & The Rolling Stones

This Florist Story was shared with us by Angelique, The FlowerGurl of Cottage Flowers & Gifts in Pasadena TX.

Red Roses

“It all started when I was a sophomore in high school. My Aunt used to run a floral shop in town. Back in the day, the shops use to close at 10:00 pm. My Parents use to make me go after school to the floral shop to keep my Aunt company so that she would not be there by herself. I would walk to the floral shop after school and listen to the radio and or TV, while at the same time doing my homework, and spending time with my Aunt. I would finish my homework and sit there just watching my Aunt do these amazing things with flowers. I would ask her, how in the heck can you come out with something like that from all that? I was intrigued by it all.

Puttin’ On The Ritz

I knew nothing about flowers. I liked them, I loved receiving them, but what she could do out of nothing at all was beyond me. So needless to say I spent a lot of time with my Aunt and watched her do all these beautiful designs that I just had to try it one day. Well from just watching and observing all that time, I surprised myself. I could not believe, nor did my Aunt, I could actually wrap some flowers in pretty paper and make them look so pretty. Well from there I moved on to bigger things like dressing plants and greening her vases. I figured if having the concept of greening a vase was so easy, then I can take the next step of puttin on the ritz.

Well she walked me through it, and to my amazement, I did it again. I could actually design flowers in a manner that it sold within an hour. I was so pleased that it just made me want to try harder. My Aunt said that I had it in me all the time. Who knows, maybe I did? Her Boss liked what I did and hired me to start work the next day.

The First Day & All of It’s Surprises

I was so excited cause I got to run the shop all by myself. I had an interesting visitor that night. This hippie-looking guy walks in and wants to buy all the red roses we had on-hand. I called my Aunt right away and told her what the guy wanted. She told me to go ahead and give him a good price and let him buy what he wanted. He bought all 4 bunches (100) we had on hand. Before he left he handed me two tickets to the Rolling Stones concert that was taking place that same night. Oh to my surprise, he was one of the members of the band!

Memories I’ll Never Forget

So sad I was unable to attend the concert, but I still have the tickets as a souvenir. My Aunt has moved on, and so have I. She is and will always be my mentor. I am the owner/designer of my own Floral Shop and I have my Aunt to thank for showing me the knowledge. She is now retired and we call her the Retired Floral Critic. That she is, because every time I send her flowers through a wire service (she lives out of town) yep, she sure does call me, to let me know, yea or nea.

I have been in business for over 15 years, and still love it like I did the first time I laid my eyes on those beautiful blooms.”

Crossroads Florist, Mahwah NJ

By Crossroads Florist in Mahwah, NJ. “Tropic Dreams Bamboo frames outline each arrangement. Green cymbidium orchids perched above are visually connected to the base by strands of steel grass. This florascape would be great as a focal point on a buffet table at a poolside party. Where else could a arrangement like this be used?”

Karyn Schneider Of The Petal Patch

Flower Shop Network had a chance to find out what makes Karyn Schneider of The Petal Patch in McFarland WI tick, and why she feels the floral industry is a fun and exciting profession.

We asked her a few questions and found some very insightful information.

The Petal Patch - McFarland WIFlower Shop Network: How long have you been a florist?
Florist: I am in year #18!

Flower Shop Network: When did open your flower shop in McFarland, WI?
Florist: 1994

Flower Shop Network: What are your floral specialties?
Florist: I specialize in unusual, different designs and bright contrasting colors in my arrangements, and of course, I specialize in wedding work!

Flower Shop Network: What is your favorite flower?
Florist: My first love is Baronia Heather. Even though it may be more of a filler/bush, it is so fabulous.

Flower Shop Network: What is your favorite wedding bouquet?
Florist: Honestly, it’s usually the one I’m working on, I live vicariously through them all. I loved one last year with blue Vanda Orchids, ivory Vendela Roses, lavender Freesia, Stephanotis and a little diamond bling. But, I’ve just rewritten this answer 4 times, and spent 30 minutes looking through my photo album, changing my mind over and over!

Flower Shop Network: What would you say are the top flower trends in MCFARLAND WI?
Florist: My customers are getting into hydrangea and have embraced Green Trick Dianthus recently; their favorites are always the bright unique mixes.

Flower Shop Network: How have you used the Wisconsin state flower in your designs?
Florist: The state flower is a woodland violet (viola papilionacea) and I have not used it in an arrangement, they are pretty tiny.

Flower Shop Network: What has been the best part of being a florist in Wisconsin?
Florist: In Wisconsin, we talk about the weather a lot. Flowers are a big part of every season here. We enjoy them in our gardens in the summer and in our houses to brighten the gloomy winter days. One of the best things about being a florist in the small town of McFarland, Wisconsin, is forming relationships with my customers and knowing what they each like. They are so appreciative and complimentary.

Flower Shop Network: Do you have a floral design philosophy?
Florist: Always think outside of the box, try something new every day. I think using different containers, new and unusual flowers and greens, gives the customer a better image of the floral industry in general. Keeping it current is important.

Flower Shop Network: What style do you specialize in — modern, traditional, romantic, etc.?
Florist: I specialize in Non-traditional arrangements.

Flower Shop Network: What makes your arrangements better or different than anybody else’s?
Florist: I like to use unique combos of flowers and colors in non-traditional ways. No traditional “roundy” arrangements in my cooler. I want my customer to feel special and unique, just like their flowers!

Flower Shop Network: Do you remember the first time you received flowers?
Florist: I got a flower arrangement from my boyfriend in High School for Prom. My family did not get or purchase flowers, so it was a big surprise to have flowers delivered to our house. My family are gardeners, so our flowers were always planted in our yard.

Flower Shop Network: How did you get started in the floral business?
Florist: I became partners with someone who had started a shop, then bought her out 6 months later.

Flower Shop Network: Favorite arrangements or other designs you’ve done?
Florist: An awesome casket spray for an avid gardener that included clay pots with moss, bright yellow and orange large Gerbera daisies, blue iris, purple and red tulips, bright pink and coral roses, all clustered and draping, with eriostomen greens. I got complimentary phone calls from the family, the minister, and the funeral director. That was a nice piece.

The Importance of Your Local Florist

Importance of Local Florists

A florist is so much more than a person who delivers flowers. They are stewards of life’s celebrations and most important occasions. Betsy Hall of Hall’s Flower Shop & Garden Center in Stone Mountain GA really says it best in this clip from the 2012 Great Lakes Expo interview with FSN’s Brock Atwill. Truly a must-see!

Scott Sella of Every Blooming Thing in Akron OH

Akron OH FloristFlower Shop Network had a chance to interview Scott Sella of Every Blooming Thing in Akron OH. We asked Scott a few questions to see what makes him tick and why he feels the floral industry is a fun and exciting profession.

FSN: How long have you been a florist?

Florist: I have been a florist for 18 years. (I started in kindergarten!)

FSN: When did open your flower shop in Akron?

Florist: I purchased Every Blooming Thing, a shop that is just 2 blocks from my home, after working for a large family owned shop for 10+ years, with a 30 minute commute. Two years before purchasing the shop, I became the designer at Every Blooming Thing and swore I would walk to work every day — I did that once!

FSN: What are your floral specialties?

Florist: I would say my “specialties” are custom jobs that let me get to know more about a person. I love to create pieces that have meaning. Funeral pieces that truly represent the deceased with one of their favorite items, as opposed to a large set piece in a shape. My grandfather’s trumpet sat next to him with a small floral piece attached, my grandmother held an old family cooking spoon that once was her mothers, among a hand tied bouquet.

FSN: What is your favorite flower?

Florist: Orchids of any form are a favorite of mine. A more common flower I love is irises, especially the dark purple iris. I think it is the deep and unique colors that attract me, along with their beautiful shapes.

FSN: What is your favorite wedding bouquet?

Florist: I love any wedding bouquet that mixes rich colors and textures. Also, I love mixing exotics in with more traditional garden flowers. I love that brides have gone away from carrying all white — a pop of color can’t be a bad thing!

FSN: What would you say are the top flower trends in Akron OH?

Florist: The trend that seems to be hanging on is simplicity. Smaller arrangements that contain unique flower mixes, or beautiful, monochromatic arrangements in simple, small cubes or cylinders. Even simple garden mixes that look natural and unarranged.

FSN: How have you used the Ohio state flower in your designs?

Florist: “The scarlet carnation” is a flower I have definitely used. Many people still have the idea that carnations are BAD– but I have always said it’s the way you use them that matters. A vase of tightly arranged scarlet red carnations can make beautiful texture with their scalloped edge. Orange, or some of the newer colors, placed deep in a vase with tulips and irises popping out makes a great spring arrangement, and of course are long-lasting. But even as the state flower, I still listen when a customer says “NO CARNATIONS”!

FSN: What has been the best part of being a florist in Ohio?

Florist: One of the best parts of being a florist in my area is the number of wholesalers and the availability of daily ordering. I can get ahold of a wholesaler or a sales truck that is in my area almost any time of the work day. Each carries a slightly different mix of stock, so that last-minute order (that wants exactly what I don’t have) can still be filled as similar as possible.

FSN: Do you have a floral design philosophy?

Florist: I find that my degree in Graphic Design/Fine Art has a great influence on my work, when a customer allows me to “be creative.” In those cases, color, texture and current design all influence my work. However, some people aren’t looking for creative, they are looking for large or traditional, and in that way, it’s the customers preferences that influence my design. When I don’t particularly like a design I do, or a “picture in the book” that a customer selects, I always think… “It’s not going to me, so I don’t need to like it completely.”

FSN: What style do you specialize in — modern, traditional, romantic, etc.?

Florist: I would have to say my preference is toward traditional/romantic with a modern twist. Again, a mix of traditional flowers with a pop of contemporary.

FSN: What makes your arrangements better or different from anybody else’s?

Florist: I am often told that my arrangements are very long-lasting. I think that is due to the fact that when I am able, I always think about what is going to die first and when it does, will there be a hole in the arrangement? Also, some of the longer-lasting flowers are usually the more traditional flowers florists use. That is another reason I am not afraid to mix traditional flowers in unique ways.

FSN: Do you remember the first time you received flowers? Tell us about it.

Florist: I would have to say the first time I remember receiving flowers was when I moved from New Jersey to Akron. My partner sent me flowers from Every Blooming Thing, the neighborhood florist, on the first morning of my arrival. They came in a nice keepsake vase that now sits behind my desk in the shop. Who knew that in about 12 years, I would own that flower shop!?

More recently, after owning the shop, my partner ordered flowers out-of-town to be on our table at dinner. He had warned them that he didn’t want your typical dozen roses. Lets just say the design was FULL, but not particularly creative.. it reminded me that bigger is not always better! He hasn’t sent me flowers since…

FSN: How did you get started in the floral business?

Florist: I was going to college and working at a church where I regularly ordered flowers for the altar. I always enjoyed going into the local florist and picking all the flowers I wanted included. The owner told me, if you ever want a job, come talk to me. I started my first day by making green carnation boutonnieres. The owner said when I picked up the knife and learned to use it properly, she knew I was going to be there awhile! (Ponti’s Petals in Dunellen NJ is now a FSN member too!)

FSN: Favorite arrangements or other designs you’ve done?

Florist: I would have to say the most fun I have had designing was when I did my own flowers for my commitment ceremony. When planning, my partner said “Who is going to do the flowers? It isn’t going to be you.” The more he thought about it, the more he knew I would never let anyone else do it. I enjoyed it so much because I was able to pick exactly what I wanted and be completely creative. It was in October, yet we had a gorgeous weekend and I spend 2 days working in my driveway, being totally free to create whatever I wanted with ALL the flowers I bought. Isn’t that exactly what we dream of as florists… that customer who says “Do whatever you would want to have!”

Sandra Hooper of MaryJane’s Flowers

Flower Shop Network had a chance to find out what makes Sandra Hooper of MaryJane’s Flowers & Gifts in Berlin NJ tick and why she feels the floral industry is a fun and exciting profession.

We asked her a few questions and found some very insightful information.

Sandra Hooper of MaryJane's FlowersFlower Shop Network: How long have you been a florist?
Florist: We have been open as a flower shop for about a year and a half now…but my floral experience goes back over 30 years.

Flower Shop Network: When did open your flower shop in Berlin?
Florist: Our Grand opening was on my mother’s birthday January 29, 2009

Flower Shop Network: What are your floral specialties?
Florist: Not sure I specialize in any one area…I try making unique and different designs for any occasion.

Flower Shop Network: What is your favorite flower?
Florist: My favorite flowers are peonies…it is a shame they are so expensive I would like to work with them more often.

Wedding Bouquet- Berlin NJFlower Shop Network: What is your favorite wedding bouquet?
Florist: My favorite wedding bouquet would be a solid ball of roses in shades of pinks with stephanotis I did for a client.

Flower Shop Network: What would you say are the top flower trends in Berlin NJ?
Florist: Berlin isn’t really a “trendy” area…most people around here seem to be a little more traditional. Although with proms we are trying to introduce more things that are possible for corsages then what has been available around here.

Flower Shop Network: How have you used the North Carolina state flower in your designs?
Florist: Well New Jersey state flower is the violet…I do try to incorporate African violets into most of our dish gardens.

Flower Shop Network: What has been the best part of being a florist in New Jersey?
Florist: Doing what I love!! wouldn’t really matter what state or where I was but this is what I always wanted.

Flower Shop Network: Do you have a floral design philosophy?
Florist: Yes I believe in complete customer satisfaction…we like to treat our clients as family.

Flower Shop Network: What style do you specialize in — modern, traditional, romantic, etc.?
Florist: I try a little of all really. Myself I prefer the traditional romantic, but I think I was born in the wrong era :)

Flower Shop Network: What makes your arrangements better or different than anybody else’s?
Florist: I think what makes ours better is taking care of the flowers from the minute them enter the shop till the minute they leave the shop…It takes more time and work and sometimes a bit more money but the best compliment we get is how long our flowers last! As for different…people get their monies worth here, we don’t skimp on flowers to save costs and this also keeps customers coming back.

Flower Shop Network: Do you remember the first time you received flowers? Tell us about it.
Florist: I think the first flowers I ever received were from my grandparents…I had been very sick in the 8th grade with mono and out of school for at least a month and a beautiful bouquet came from them to try and brighten things.

Flower Shop Network: How did you get started in the floral business?
Florist: Actually was my first part time job at age 16 was in a flower shop and just loved being around the flowers. I feel I have a natural artistic ability when it comes to being creative which I feel goes hand in hand.

Flower Shop Network: Favorite arrangements or other designs you’ve done?
Florist: I love making bridal bouquets…but I also like just being creative so I thoroughly enjoyed FSN’s Design Challenge in which I took took first place!

Bitsy Carter of Hope Floral in Hope AR

Flower Shop Network had a chance to interview the 2010 Arkansas Designer of the Year Bitsy Carter of Hope Floral in Hope AR.

Florist Bitsy Carter & FamilyWe asked Bitsy a few questions to see what makes her tick and why she feels the floral industry is a fun and exciting profession.

Flower Shop Network: How long have you been a florist?
Florist Bitsy Carter: 12 years…officially, flower shop child for years before!

Flower Shop Network: When did you open your flower shop in Hope?
Florist Bitsy Carter: Our shop has been in Hope for more than a half century, however, my parents bought it in 1995!

Flower Shop Network: What would you say are the top flower trends in Hope, Ar?
Florist Bitsy Carter: Hope is a small rural town in Southwest Arkansas, needless to say many of our customers are becoming comfortable when we take them out of their “box”.  I would definitely say that using decorative wire in designs and novelty items such as butterflies, etc… are a hot ticket item in adding to minimal designs ie cubes, etc… to give it that fun, distinctive POP!

Flower Shop Network: What are your floral specialties?
Florist Bitsy Carter: I LOVE prom work!! Love the idea of having fun with something that so many florists dread…the teens are open to new and exciting designs that challenge me!

Trendy Prom BoutonniereFlower Shop Network: Favorite arrangements or other designs you’ve done?
Florist Bitsy Carter: My favorite design currently is our new boutonniere style…I absolutely love the endless design opportunities that decorative wire has opened up for florists!! They are simple, but chic for prom!

We also have a reappearing mannequin arrangement that “pops up” at an annual fundraiser event we sponsor for our local college. It is the highlight of the party, everyone is looking for FiFi and her flowers!!

Flower Shop Network: What is your favorite flower?
Florist Bitsy Carter: I love iris, don’t like to work with them…but love the flower itself!

Flower Shop Network: What is your favorite wedding bouquet?
Florist Bitsy Carter: Fall bouquets are always my favorite!! The textures and materials are just that much more interesting and challenging! And you can NEVER go wrong with fall tones!

Flower Shop Network: How have you used the Arkansas state flower in your designs?
Florist Bitsy Carter: Our state flower is an apple blossom, saying that I have never specifically used that flower nor has it ever been requested.

Flower Shop Network: What has been the best part of being a florist in Arkansas?
Florist Bitsy Carter: Arkansas is a unique state in that most of our shops, shop owners, employees, designers, etc… are networked in someway or another. We have an awesome state association that offers many educational and competitive opportunities to get to know and learn from other florists that are in the same areas as we are! We have similar stories to share and often lean on each other for extra help in good times and bad times. I feel very very fortunate to be in the floral industry in Arkansas today!

Unique Floral Design From Hope FloralFlower Shop Network: Do you have a floral design philosophy?
Florist Bitsy Carter: YES!! Start with colors! If the color harmony isn’t there the eye is totally thrown off no matter how amazing the design is!

Flower Shop Network: What style do you specialize in–modern, traditional, romantic, etc…?
Florist Bitsy Carter: I can’t say that I specifically specialize in any type of design other than what my customer asks for!! I thoroughly enjoy modern design, very clean lines, tight mechanics, etc…

Flower Shop Network: What makes your arrangements better or different than anybody’s else’s?
Florist Bitsy Carter: I wouldn’t say my designs are any better than anyone else’s…however, I do take pride in every design that leaves my shop or has my name on it! I particularly take pride in design mechanics and understanding the design principles and elements of design so that each design is not a guessing game….but a beautiful product for someone to enjoy!!

Flower Shop Network: Do you remember the first time you received flowers?
Florist Bitsy Carter: A few years ago, one of my older customers, who picks up every order and hand delivers them himself, ordered an arrangement to be picked up. He kept saying, ” Make it fun for someone like around your age!” So I did!! It was one of the coolest, funkiest arrangement I have ever made!! He paid for it, signed the card and turned around and said, “Happy Birthday Bitsy, make sure these go home and don’t get resold!!” I took them home and actually enjoyed a beautiful bouquet for my birthday!!:)

Flower Shop Network: How did you get started in the floral business?
Florist Bitsy Carter: A second-generation florist, I came into it  by family chance! My dad has been a florist all my life and I watched him for years, never thinking it would be me someday! Eventually, my dad taught me little by little, all the time saying, ” I’m teaching you so I can actually have a vacation.” Best decision of his life, to teach me floral arts!! I love it…always said I would never do it, but love every single minute of it!! I am so thankful to be part of a shop and industry that ultimately cares for people and their needs! And I am even more thankful that it shows in our flowers and on our faces!

The enthusiasm Bitsy has for the floral industry is only part of the reason she was named 2010’s Arkansas Designer of the Year. Creative outside-of-the-box designs and strong customer relationships are what lead to her recognition.
