Kids Are Customers Too! (Or Will Be Soon)

Young Girl Holding Flowers

This is a guest post written by Aut Fuller at Floral Expressions in Owings MD.

In my 35 years around this industry, it never ceases to amaze me how many business owners don’t like it when young kids visit. As a parent of 3 kids myself, there have been many times when visiting a store you get the evil eye for bringing the young ones.

Cater To The Kids

I  know, I know, all the breakable stuff, and the sticky fingers touching everything, but at our store we talk to the little ones and cater to them. We give them a flower (even when they say they don’t really like them, LOL) and tell them to just surprise someone with it. Once they see the joy of giving, they learn a valuable life lesson.

To keep their interest, we have a toy section to keep them busy while mom shops and we are constantly looking for cool, new things just for the kids.

Hard Work Pays Off

We have been located in the same store for 25 years now, and we are now doing proms, weddings and birthdays of the kids whose parents were kids 25 years ago. It is very exciting when the next generation of customers come in with Grandma to see their friend the florist. How cool is that?

What other business can say that anymore? I refuse to believe that customer service is dead. IT’S ALIVE AND WELL HERE!

Breaking The Mold in Your Floral Designs

Break The Mold With Modern Flower Designs

Robbin Yelverton is BACK with even more wise words for us flower lovers!

Sometimes when things around the flower shop are hectic, it’s easy to fall into the slump of creating the same types of arrangements over and over again. Well, it’s time to BREAK THE MOLD! Robbin is here to show us how to use the same materials we would use to create a “roundy-moundy” flower arrangement, and turn it into something more stylish!

People like to see things they’ve never seen before, whether it be film, art or flowers. Instead of ‘Oh, well that’s pretty,’ make your customers say WOW! and want to show it off to all their friends!

Florist Scammers At It Again

Scam AlertI didn’t have to go far to hear this scam was back; they actually sent it to MY email thinking I was a florist! I wanted to warn all florists to stay alert this spring and be aware of scammers who want to take advantage of your business.

You often hear this scam being done through hearing impaired phone service (ttd relay), but also can come via e-mail or any other messaging method. Here is the e-mail scam I received this morning:

Hello This Ben Bruce i will like to order for 8 big bouquets flowers for my UNCLE wedding and i want the price range of $200 per one Approximately 26″ W x 41″ H and the color should be in bright summer color, it will be pick up by a private courier on the 4th of April and want them arranged in vases so can i have the total cost that now so that i can pay with my card now and so can i have yr store address so i can forward it to the shipper agent and i will like you to do me a favor due to my physical disability…

Thanks
Ben

How do I know this is a scam?

1. The broken English. Many of these scams originate outside of the US and the message will be very choppy. The way they’ve typed UNCLE is like they are filling in the blank of some scamming copy template. While not all choppy messages are scams, they should be more carefully examined.

2. The shipper agent. This is the tell tale sign that it is a scam. Why are they paying an outside shipper instead of having you deliver them yourself? This is just too fishy.

If you are unsure if an email or other request is a scam, ask lots of questions! You might even reply back to this guy and explain your own delivery rates. More than likely, you’ll never hear from him again.

More scam alerts from the Flower Shop Network blog.

Please, if anyone else comes across this, or any other floral industry scams, let us know so we can warn others by emailing social@flowershopnetwork.com.

Picture Perfect Floral Designs

FSN President Loranne Atwill and floral artist Robbin Yelverton, AIFD, AAF, CF, PFCI, led a hands-on workshop at the Great Lakes Floral Expo earlier this March. This workshop was a little different than the ones you usually see at state floral shows because it dealt more with photography than design. Attendees learned techniques they could use to take better photos of their floral designs.

Flower Photography Tips

Class Description:

You have a Website… now you want to put your own custom designs on it. The arrangements look wonderful, but the pictures just don’t do them justice – sound familiar? Learn great tips to making Web-worthy designs and photos in this session! You will make an arrangement in class, then learn how to photograph it for quality pictures for the Web.

No matter what skill level or type of camera, Robbin gives actionable ideas for getting the most out of your flower photography attempts.

Tornado & Storm Safety In Your Flower Shop

As tornado season is barely here yet, we’ve already seen some very powerful storms. Flower Shop Network wants all florists (and, well, everyone) to make sure they are ready in the event of a tornado. This post is all about developing your tornado plan, so that if it happens, you know what to do, where to be, and what to expect.

Before A Tornado

  • Tornado SafetyRadio + Batteries – If you’re in an area where tornado are common, be sure you’ve got a good weather radio with extra batteries somewhere in your shop.
  • Know the terminology – A tornado WATCH is issued when weather conditions favor the formation of tornadoes, for example, during a severe thunderstorm — be prepared to take shelter immediately if conditions worsen. A tornado WARNING is issued when a tornado funnel is sighted or indicated by weather radar — You should take shelter immediately!
  • Know the plan – have a plan and know all the safest places in your shop. Safe locations include: a basement or inside room on the lowest floor, such as a closet or hallway. Make sure ALL employees know the location of these safe areas.

Make sure your safe area avoids all: windows, glass doors (coolers), or other dangerous locations in the event of strong winds or hail.

  • Room For All – Make sure the safe area in your building has room for all your employees and more. (You may have customers or suppliers in your store during a tornado.)
  • Be Ready For Anything – Make an emergency kit for your store, including: flashlights, candles, the radio and extra batteries, and a first aid kit.
  • Consider Customers – Have an emergency plan for dealing with customers in the event of a dangerous storm. Make sure your employees know exactly how to handle customers in this situation. It may be a good idea to label your safe locations.
  • Potential Hazards – Evaluate your store for potential dangers. You may want to move vases from an upper shelf to a lower one. Secure wall decorations and anything else that may cause harm during a dangerous storm.
  • Outside Hazards – Identify any hazards outdoors. Secure any unstable items that may be outside your store, decorations, furniture, buckets, etc. Clear any potentially dangerous trees or branches that could fall, causing injury or damage.
