The True Meaning Behind Parents’ Day

Did you know that Parents’ Day promotes diversity and religious freedom? Keep reading to learn the true purpose of Parents’ Day and how you can celebrate!

Many Americans do not know the true history behind Parents’ Day and believe that it is just another holiday crafted to promote spending and gift-giving. The purpose of this national holiday is much deeper, aiming to strengthen our communities and country.

What is Parents’ Day?

In 1994 President Bill Clinton signed into law the resolution unanimously adopted by the U.S. Congress establishing the fourth Sunday of every July as Parents’ Day, a perennial day of commemoration similar to Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. According to the Congressional Resolution, Parents’ Day is established for, “recognizing, uplifting, and supporting the role of parents in the rearing of children.” The establishment of Parents’ Day was the result of a bipartisan, multiracial and interfaith coalition of religious, civic and elected leaders who recognized the need to promote responsible parenting in our society and to uplift ideal parental role models, especially for our nation’s children. Since the creation of this annual day of commemoration, local faith communities, elected officials and activists throughout the nation have creatively launched many activities around the theme of Parents’ day designed to celebrate and strengthen the traditional, two-parent family.

Parents’ Day is a time for every religion and race across the country to come together to support the family. Our culture emphasizes self-gratification, which is the opposite of parenthood. Parenthood requires selfless, unconditional love. Parents’ Day aims to promote the need for responsible parenting and a commitment to the family.

Pay it Forward with Flowers

daisy-heart-flowers-flower-heart

Almost everybody enjoys receiving gifts.  It’s a natural way to brighten someone’s day when they are feeling down.  What most people don’t realize, giving feels as good, if not better than, receiving.

The concept of paying it forward is nothing new.  Most of us have even participated.  That’s what National Give Something Away Day is all about.  Gather up those old clothes in your closet and take them to a charity.  Leave a little something in your mailbox for the mail carrier.  It doesn’t have to be anything too fancy.

Today is also a great reason to give flowers.  Stop by and see your local florist.  Buy a bouquet (or two) of daisies, roses, or whatever your florist has available.  Now you have everything you need to brighten multiple people’s day!  Walk down the street or visit local businesses, and give them away, one-by-one.  If you have a few left, stop in at a hospital or nursing home and leave them for the employees or residents.   A simple thank you and a pretty bloom can make a big difference.  It’s that easy!

Celebrate National Give Something Away Day by paying it forward with flowers!

Searching for a Father’s Day Gift? Ask the Professionals!

Father’s Day is coming and although he may not show it, your dad is excited to see what his children (or loving spouse) are going to do. Dad’s have feelings too and they like to be recognized for the hard work they do.

Don’t buy him another pack of socks and a tie.
This is the person who taught you how to ride a bike, who held your hand when you broke your arm, who cheered you on as you rounded the baseline and consoled you after your first break-up. After everything dad has done for you, he deserves an amazing gift!

It’s time to think outside of the box.
Yes, I’m talking about your local florist. Florists are professionals at designing customized gifts. They have years of experience at making holidays one to remember. A local florist can be trusted to put together the perfect arrangement to wow your dad.

Customize His Arrangement
Most florists can create an arrangement of flowers with your dad’s favorite team’s colors as well as use themed accessories for any of the different major sports. Want a golf theme? They can do it! Football? You bet. Baseball, basketball, tennis, and hockey? Check, check, check, and check! A quick phone call should answer any questions you have and ensure that you get exactly what you want.

Gift Baskets
What dad wouldn’t like to receive a basket full of their favorite sweets and snacks? Whether salty snacks, chocolate snacks or tasty fruit, your local florist has it! Gift baskets are a great way to compliment a gift you have already purchased, or they can stand on their own merits as a solo gift.

Air-Cleansing Plants
Does dad have a shop, a workbench in the garage, or a man cave?  Nothing helps clean the air in a musty, man-permeated space quite like a living plant.  A plant will give your paterfamilias an actual task to perform so he doesn’t have to simply putter around, and it will provide him with something to talk to when he is working alone. The wide variety of plants available will guarantee that you find something compatible with your dad and his favorite hangout spot.
