Look hard upon the beautiful Narcissus
It’s grace never failing to enthrall
This thing with so much intrigue
It’s hard to imagine a more perfect bloom
The young daffodil that stirs us all
When I learned that Narcissus is the birth month flower of December, I began rereading the story of Narcissus in Greek mythology. Though the story itself is somewhat tragic, it leaves quite a lot to be said for the remarkable beauty of the Narcissus.
The story has many tellers and therefore many versions but is simply illustrated by a young man, the Thespian Narcissus, who was so taken by his own beauty that he could never fully love another. Every version ends in a beautiful flower growing first from the spot where this young man died. There is nothing so fitting of this sort of tale than to attribute it to one of the most beautiful and instantly beloved flowers so that no one who has ever seen one can forget its beauty or the story behind its significance.
Again, I think there is a lot to be said for the remarkable beauty of this flower. Daffodil (Narcissus) are gorgeous flowers that can be used to celebrate holidays, special occasions, and just because days when a little pick-me-up is needed. Narcissus even have incredibly beautiful flower meanings. Narcissus represent respect, modesty and faithfulness. These are lessons that should be taken from the stories of Narcissus and can be passed on to friends and family, whether familiar with the Greek tale or not.
Thankfully, I do not have many December birthday celebrations. However, my stepdaughter of unsurpassed beauty (that’s my creative leeway for the year though it’s not far off) celebrates her birthday on the first day of December. This will make her fifth wonderful year on the planet and my family is trying to find an unforgettable way to enjoy the day. Trying to maintain the new tradition of giving creative astrological flowers arrangements from a local florist, I contacted my family florist and requested a bouquet of narcissus to be presented to her by her father when she first wakes. The rest of the day will be filled with fun treats for her and her friends. It plans to be an amazing day that starts with a cheery look at pretty Narcissus.
Whether the loved ones in your life are celebrating a 5th or 55th December birthday, jazz up the day this year with a creative birthday gift idea. Ask your local florist to create an arrangement of his or her December birth month flowers.
