Ask the Expert: What is this plant and how do I care for it?
My Mother was given this plant for her birthday and than gave it to me, we do not know what it is or how to take care of it, it is not doing well and I don’t know what to do for it… the picture is when she first got it.. thank you so much.  PatriciaFriendship Plant.

  1. Patricia,

Whether intentional or not, this was a perfect plant choice for a birthday since the common name of this plant is friendship. This plant is from the Pilea family and I believe it is a Pilea involucrata which is actually Pan-American friendship plant or Panamiga.

Pileas like light shade to shady conditions with moist soil. In the U.S. it is considered a houseplant since it is a zone 10-11 plant. To keep the plant from getting leggy pinch the terminal buds often. This plant is great for terrariums because it likes humid conditions. If the air in your home tends to be dry, mist the air surrounding the plant occasionally.
