Ask the Expert: Plant Identification
Hello,
I spotted this plant in the ‘Postman’s Park’ near St. Pauls Cathedral. I find it’s unusual dual style of flowers very attractive and would like to acquire a sample for my own garden. I was wondering if anyone could kindly identify it for me?
Many thanks,
John
John,
The plant is a variegated lacecap hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla maybe a ‘Mariesii Variegata’ or a ‘Bailday”). This plant is hardy in zones 5-9 and is a summer flowering deciduous shrub. It likes full sun to part shade (although in extremely hot area it might need protection from the sun). Most local garden centers in zones 5 – 9 will carry some type of lacecap hydrangea. If you need help finding a St Paul Garden Center the Minnesota Nursery & Landscaping Association can help you find one.
For those of you who are interested in obtaining only the blooms ask your local St. Paul florist if they carry lacecap Hydrangea by the stem. In fact many local flower shops may be able to sell you hydrangea blooms by the stem.
