Best 5 Reasons to Send Flowers in September

Summer is starting to wind down and Fall begins this month. So it is last hurrahs and back to school. Cold rainy days will be be here before you know it so make every day count!

Here are our top 5 reasons to send flowers this month.

1. Labor Day – September 1st

No white after Labor Day! But you still have time to order fresh beautiful flowers for that hard-working person in your life. An all-white arrangement makes a charming hostess gift. However you are celebrating this well-earned day off, let someone know how much your appreciate them. This is an especially nice gesture if you know anyone who actually has to work on Labor Day!

2. Grandparents Day – September 8th

In 1978, President Jimmy Carter dedicated the first Sunday after Labor Day as National Grandparents Day. This is a day to celebrate the love and kindness that only grandparents give. Show some of your very special family members how much they mean to you and your family but sending flowers and listening to a few stories.

3. First Day of Autumn – September 22nd

It will officially be Fall and what better way to get ready for fuzzy scarf weather, turning leaves and hot chocolate cravings than to send someone a gorgeous fall bouquet. Pick from fiery reds, blazing oranges, warm yellows and deep purples for the perfect welcome to the season.

4. Gold Star Mother’s Day – September 29th

This U.S. tradition is held on the last Sunday of September each year. This is a day for people to recognize and honor those who have lost a son or daughter while serving the United States Armed Forces. If you want to participate in a wreath laying ceremony, check with a local florist to have a gold star incorporated into a floral wreath. Sending flowers to the family is also a thoughtful remembrance.

5. September Birthdays

For all those Fall babies out there, the flower of the month is the lovely aster in so many colors like pink, red, white, lilac and mauve. This flower has long symbolized faith, wisdom and love. In Victorian times this flower conveyed love and patience. The name “aster” comes from the Greek word for “star.”  Help a bright and shining star in your life celebrate their birthday this month with a beautiful arrangement on their special day.

What is This Small Ground Cover With Yellow Flowers

Ground COverAsk the Expert:

Please take a look at the small ground cover plant observed in a clear, non-active ag field. It has tiny yellow flowers.

Now, are the dense clustered green and scattered individuals the same?

SD

Plant Expert Reply:

SD,

It could be a type of Lysimachia nemorum sometimes referred to as Yellow pimpernel. I can’t see what the yellow flowers look like. Here is a link to what I think it is. Tell me if it looks like your plant.

Thanks

Ask The Expert: What Is This Mystery Trumpet Flower?

Ask the Plant Expert:

“I have moonflowers I grew last growing season (I am located in Wyoming) in a pot. I harvested the seeds and planted in several pots this year. What I noticed growing in the middle of our grass, by my children’s trampoline, is something that looks like a hybrid moonflower. The flowers are similar (just smaller). They are just as fragrant, and they are developing seed pods (just like the ‘regular’ moonflower plant). However, it look much different. The leaves are shaper (not rounded like the other plants). Do you think this moonflower somehow bred with a seed to a weed?

datura-mystery-plant datura-mystery-plant2

I am attaching two pictures of the plant in question. It shows the leaves, blooms and seed pods. Any help would be appreciated! I don’t know if I should harvest these seed pods, or destroy them! The plant smells pretty, so I hate to do that, but I also don’t want some weird, unknown thing growing around my yard! Thank you so much!” – Angela

Flower Shop Network Plant Expert Reply:
I believe what you have there is a relative of your moonflower. Your moonflower is a type of Datura and this new mystery shrub is in the same family. I believe it to be Datura stramonium or Datura leichhardtii. I would think this is more likely to be a random weed than a hybrid of your moonflower and a rogue weed, but I guess stranger things have happened.

Although the flowers are beautiful, all Datura plants contain tropane alkaloids which are toxic, so you might want to keep this in mind when deciding whether it stays or has to go! Hope this helps!

August Newsletter: Back to School Bonanza!

Send Back To School Flowers

Make Back-to-School Special!

With the return of August comes back-to-school! School is exciting for the learning and social opportunities, but the downside is that our children are leaving the beauty of the out of doors behind them as they begin their time back in the classroom. Not to fret, this is the perfect time to send a little taste of outside in with them!

Flowers are always the perfect gift, whether for a child returning to learn at his teacher’s knee, a professor entering the revered halls of learning with the goal of molding young minds, or an administrator who may need a bright and cheery pick-me-up from the daily grind. Any reason is a good reason to send flowers. They are a beacon of joy and happiness, a reminder of the natural world all around us and they just put smiles on people’s faces!

Make going back-to-school special again. Give flowers!

Back-to-School: The Power of Flowers

It’s Back-To-School Time. With the start of classes, it becomes necessary to stop and consider how to make that first day go as smoothly as possible. You may believe you’ve already got everything you need, but whether a parent, student or teacher, there is most likely one purchase you have yet to make. I’m talking about flowers, of course! Fresh blooms fulfill multiple roles, all of which are perfect for the first day of school!
