Nay-saying Critics Are Wrong – Flowers Make The Best Gift

Have you ever seen the commercial that makes fun of bad Christmas gifts? It shows bad sweaters and a few other gift items, but not flowers. After watching it, I realized that flowers are the one gift that people don’t make fun of, roll their eye at, re-gift or exchange.

Critic: But Flowers Don’t Last Forever…

Spring Green FlowersOh critics will complain that flowers don’t last forever, but that is also the beauty of them. Think about it — you get that tinge of excitement when the flower delivery person hands you the bouquet. You spend several days enjoying the scent and sight of the lovely flowers.  And,when they are gone you still carry with you the warm and the fond memory of them.

You wouldn’t want a kiss to last forever. What fun would that be?  But the memory — oh the memory — that is the value of the flowers, just as it is with a kiss.

Critic: But Flowers are Frivolous…

Some critics would argue that flowers are frivolous; I feel for these critics. I suspect for them a good meal is frivolous, too.  Life is full of have-tos, stress and sacrifices. We all work hard to provide for our families. Often sacrificing our own wants and desires. So every now and then being a little frivolous is something we should embrace for ourselves and those we love and value.

It is kind of ironic that most people who would never buy flowers for themselves are the very people who are the most excited to receive them? If you don’t believe me, send that self-sacrificing person flowers and watch their expression when the delivery person arrives with the flowers. If you can’t be there, have the delivery person take their picture with the the flowers. I have never delivered flowers that weren’t followed by a smile, even a subtle one.

Critic: But Flowers Are For Girls…

Tiptoe Through Tulips This April

April Tulips

April already? The weather is just turning warm and the urge to get outside in the fresh air is becoming too strong to resist. The Latin name Aprilis is considered to come from the verb aperire meaning, “to open,” in allusion to its being the season when trees and flowers begin to “open.”

After a chilly winter with bare trees and the absence of flowers, it’s easy to see why spring is many people’s most favorite season. Tulips, irises, daffodils, hyacinths and all other flowers of spring are poking their brightly colored heads out for all to see. (April is also National Gardening Month.)

If you’re still waiting on your flowers to awaken from their winter slumber, why not order a bouquet of fresh spring flowers for your home? No need to wait for April’s showers to bring flowers in May with the help of your local florist. The Tip Top Tulip bouquet above is just one example of the many beautiful options for sending spring flowers.

Know someone who is unable to get out and see the emerging flowers themselves? Flowers are a great little pick-me-up that are sure to help anyone feel the joy of spring.

If you’re planning to send flowers for spring, always always always use a real local florist when sending.

Time to get EGG-cited!

Easter garden arrangement by Crossroads Florist, Mahwah NJ

People everywhere are starting to put more creativity into holiday celebrations that ever before. (I blame Pinterest.) Easter is no exception. Growing up, I think I looked forward to wearing a hat to church more than anything. Now kids practically celebrate the entire month with Easter bunny pictures, school activities, extreme egg dying, hiding chocolate coins for the Easter bunny and even more activities I have never heard of before, plus candy candy candy!

With all the Easter chaos, having your family gathered together for group activities might make it worth it after all. Dying eggs for Easter is a long-standing tradition that is fun for family members of all ages.

Every year, Americans dye and decorate more than 180 million eggs during the Easter season.

History of Dying Eggs

The Easter egg tradition started by merging with the celebration of the final provisions of Lent. Historically, eggs were forbidden during Lent, but chickens continued to lay eggs. Eggs would have been hard-boiled so they wouldn’t go to waste. This began the tradition of decorating eggs and feasting on egg-filled meals during the time of Easter. Symbolically, the hard shell of the egg represented the sealed Tomb of Christ — the cracking of which symbolized his resurrection from the dead.

Egg Dying & Decorating Ideas

Like I said earlier, with the rise of Pinterest, there are more ideas out there for dying and decorating eggs than ever before.

  • 1. Wrap eggs in rubber bands to create stripes of white or colors (fully dye the egg first, then rubber band and dye again).
  • 2. Simply use markers to decorate. (Great for small kids who might not be ready for the ‘mess’.) [Read more…]

The Floral Olympics at the Great Lakes Floral Expo 2013

The Floral Olympics at the Great Lakes Floral Expo

Back around the first of March the FSN crew attended one of the biggest floral design shows in the nation – the Great Lakes Floral Expo. One of their big themes this year was ‘Floral Olympics’. All of the programs, workshops and seminars dealt with Reaching for Excellence and Going for Gold.

 Floral Olympics Floral Olympics

Just like in the real Olympics, the Great Lakes Floral Expo had a grand Opening Ceremonies presented by Carolyn Clark Kurek, AIFD. Carolyn demonstrated the application of the principles and elements of design using contorting gymnasts. She would talk about a specific element of design and the contortionist would use their body to demonstrate. As you can imagine, this presentation has gotten rave reviews!

Other Olympic themed programs include: Your Gold Medal Staff, The Balance Beam of Successful Weddings, Floral Olympic Awards Gala and more.
