South Carolina Florist Association Convention 2012

We had such a blast at the South Carolina Florist Association‘s annual convention this past weekend! The show was themed “Inspiration for Innovation” and it was just that. With great presentations, competitions and opportunities for networking, this was the place to be for florists.

Check out the amazing floral design in the Flower Shop Network Booth! It was created by Bernard (pictured left) from Rosewood Florist in Columbia, SC. It was filled with lush hydrangeas, gorgeous gladiolus, bells of Ireland, roses and much more!

Send Red-Hot Flowers To Your Summer Love

Summer love is blooming everywhere. Whether it’s a new summer love or re-kindling the romance through summer activities, everyone is feeling closer together. There is always something fun to do during the summer: trips to the lake, hiking, camping, picnics, out-door parties, etc. These are only better when you’re with the one you love.

So guys, how do you spark romance during the summer? Send her red-hot summer flowers! Think about it – It’s Monday, you’ve got big plans for the weekend and you both can’t wait to get outdoors again. Send her red-hot flowers to remind her the weekend is almost here and soon the fun will begin again!

Tip: If you know her favorite color or flower, send her those instead! Take it from a girl who knows, we love it when our guys pay attention to the little details.

Help! What Is This Red Fruit Vine From Fort Worth?

Ask the Expert: What is this vine?

I live in the Fort Worth TX area in the country. For the past 3 summers this vine has been growing along the fence near my entrance gate. It has been so dry here this year the leaves are yellow and turning brown instead of green as in previous years. But you can easily see the shape in these pics. And the fruit of course. It withers and dies before August. Each “fruit” contains many I-2mm seeds. Any idea what this is? –Ginny

Help! What Is This Strange Flower?

These plants cropped up suddenly this spring in Franklin, MA in several locations near hemlock trees. Never had them before. What are they? Looks like an orchid family plant to me.

This plant – actually there are several clusters of two each, in and area around the circumference of several hemlock trees – emerged in May and sent up a spikes of dozens of fuzzy flower buds in the days that followed. The flowers have only just now opened. The area is actually fairly dry. The hemlocks survive only because of a sprinkler system nearby. They provide shade to these plants part of the day. The area is a border and is heavily mulched. As I said, they weren’t planted and weren’t there last year — they just appeared suddenly this year. Soil is poorly drained, heavy clay, acidic. – Michael

Big News At The Memphis Botanic Garden

Here on the FSN Blog, our Plant Expert answers hundreds of your plant care and identification questions. However, when we’re stumped, we often turn to the Memphis Botanic Garden for their advice. This week, they received BIG news and we thought we’d share in the excitement!

The Memphis Botanic Garden just received a huge endorsement for their tree program by being designated the first Center of Excellence for Urban Forestry in Tennessee.

As a Center of Excellence, they will sponsor educational programs, help with arboretum certification, actively promote tree health and growth, and be the arm of the Tennessee Urban Forestry Council in West Tennessee. There will be three COE’s total for the state, theirs will be the only one in West Tennessee.

In a blog from last June, we wrote about the Garden’s already-extensive tree program:

Memphis Botanic Garden offers visitors 96 acres of small gardens and trails, thousands of flowers, but also thousands of unique trees. With 152 different species of trees, the Memphis Botanic Garden is classified as a Level IV Arboretum by the Tennessee Urban Forestry Council. This Level IV designation makes the Garden one of four in the state and the only one in West Tennessee. “We estimate there are at least 2000 trees in the Garden – with lots of duplicates,” says Adult Education Manager Laurie Williams. Patrick Haller, TUFC President, commented that “This is a definite step forward for urban forestry in Tennessee and we are excited about this program.”

Congratulations again for a well-deserved honor. If you’re in the West Tennessee area, be sure to pay them a visit!
