5 Tips For Savoring The Remaining Days of Spring

The last days of spring are upon us; summer officially begins on June 20th.

Spring Green FlowersWhile it already feels like summer in a lot of places, it’s not official yet! Why not celebrate the remaining days of spring while you can? This year is going by quick enough, it’s time to settle down and pay more attention to the changing seasons.

  • Ordering Spring Flowers – You know I have to suggest it, but it’s true! Nothing shouts SPRING more than spring flowers. Don’t think you have to send them to anyone either, order them as a treat for you and your family. However, if you have a friend who needs a boost in spirits, spring flowers are the way to go!
  • Spring Picnic – While you can enjoy these in summer, it’s often too hot. Spring is the perfect time for picnics and family get-togethers.
  • Spring Cleaning – This isn’t necessarily fun, but very spring! Cleaning helps us take the load off, both literally and mentally. Clearing clutter in our homes helps in so many aspects of our life. Plus you’ll have plenty of time to enjoy summer and not have to worry about cleaning.
  • Makeover Madness – Spring clean doesn’t have to stop at the house; treat yourself to a makeover, facial, pedicure, haircut or any other pampering. This will make you feel youthful, energized and ready for summer!
  • Cloud Parade – Take some time to get outside! While temps are still comfortable, take a blanket, towel or yoga mat outside. Lay back and watch the parade of clouds go by. Invite friends or family to join you and challenge each others’ imagination by spotting shapes in the clouds.

While these are just a few suggestions, there are hundreds of ways you can enjoy this time of year. However you do it, enjoy yourself! Take the time to stop and smell the roses. Don’t let spring pass you by without taking full advantage of it!

Is My Anthurium an Indoor or Outdoor Plant?

Ask the Plant Expert:

Is my plant an in door plant or outdoor plant? Anthedesia Fresh. It is an anthurium with red stamens, big green leaves and it’s roots are over a foot long. I have just re-potted it, but it will need an extremely large pot soon if it is not an out door plant. It was a present and I have not seen one before. I don’t have a photo of it. I just hope you can help me. -Margaret

Anthurium ArrangementFlower Shop Network has a blog post about the care of Anthurium which is the genus for Antheedesia. Reading Proper Care For an Anthurium Flower should answer many questions about this plant.

As for whether it can grow as an outdoor plant in your area, I am not sure.  It depends where in the United Kingdom you live. Anthuirum are tropical by nature, and can not be exposed to temperatures below  -1.1° Celsius (30° Fahrenheit) and they would really prefer temperatures no lower than 4.4° C  and 40°  F.

Hope this helps!

Thunbergia Alata - Black Eyed Susan

Flower Shop Network Plant Expert Reply:

Aubrey,

I believe what you have is a Thunbergia vine.  It is sometimes called Black-eyed Susan vine. As for care, they are real easy.  Thunbergia alata likes full sun and a well-drained but moist soil.  It is considered an annual except in tropical areas.  The best place for it is in an area that gets a little shade in the late afternoon, but full sun otherwise.  It will grow rapidly and bloom all summer through the fall.

Flower Arrangement at Louisiana State Florist Association

Two from our FSN team had the chance to attend the 2012 Louisiana State Florist Convention. They had a blast and met a lot of great florists from Louisiana and the surrounding areas.

Ken from FSN and Tommy from Tommy's Flowers, Lafayette LA Flower Arrangement at Louisiana State Florist Association

The above flower arrangement was designed by Tommy (also pictured above in the light blue shirt) of Tommy’s Flowers in Lafayette, LA. And what an impressive design it was. The top portion included some of the biggest lilies and hydrangeas you’ve ever seen! There was also a small arrangement built inside the vase for added interest. All-together it was a stunning piece of floral art. Thanks so much, Tommy!
