FSN Applauds Tennessee’s Consumer Protection Efforts

Flower Shop Network applauds the state of Tennessee in their latest legislation against deceptive Internet listings. Flower Shop Network along with our partners in the floral industry appreciate the work being done by the State of Tennessee toward strengthening consumer protection which includes the recent effort to widen an existing ban on deceptive telephone listings. Effective July 1, the state of Tennessee has broadened the current law to include a ban on deceptive Internet practices.

As of July 1, any company or companies that purposely misrepresent geographic location through misleading business name, telephone listings, dialing service or over the Internet with the intention of gaining an unfair competitive advantage is subject to a minimum penalty of $1000 per violation. Maximum penalty per violation is up to $5000.

Filing a complaint against a company suspected of fraudulent behavior of this nature involves delivering evidence along with a formal complaint to the office of Consumer Affairs for the State of Tennessee. If the evidence proves sufficient, penalties will be issued.

Presently 23 states authorize a ban against deceptive telephone listings. This legislative move by the State of Tennessee will add an extra strong arm of protection to consumers—one of which Flower Shop Network firmly approves. Only listing real local florists and flower shops in our directory, Flower Shop Network commends these Tennessee legislators for their efforts in preserving the integrity of honest businesspeople and consumers.

For more information about this Tennessee Legislation go to the Tennessee Legislation site and read HB3834 .

Iowa Florists Brave Storms and Floods

The effects of the horrible floods that have recently affected Iowa are being felt nationwide. Iowa florists, though exhibiting a tenacious resilience, are facing a major challenge as many flower shops are under as much as ten feet of water.

According to a recent online article from the Society of American Florists, Flower Shop Network member Todd Krieger is among the florists in Iowa who were struck by the recent floods and storms. Krieger’s Greenhouses & Floral in Mason City spent more than 36 hours under 2 feet of water causing Mr. Krieger to close for five days. The damage is still present and remains a daily reminder of the struggle that many Iowa residents are facing in the coming months.

Flower Shop Network member florists in Cedar Rapids are also experiencing difficulties due to flooding. Al Pierson of Pierson’s Flower Shop has been removed from the main location of his shop and operating out of a second location on higher ground. Sally Stejskal of Stejskal Florists, Inc. escaped the flooding by a mere one-half mile. Ms. Stejskal, who has compassionately taken in an employee whose family was affected by flooding, is also feeling the pangs of witnessing her local community in disarray.

Flower Shop Network would like to extend our sympathy and support to these and other Midwestern florists affected by the tragic storms and floods. The endurance and vigilant spirits of these incredible survivors is truly inspirational to us all. For more information about disaster relief and learn how to help flood survivors visit the American Red Cross or the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

East Sandwich Flower Shop Has The Golden Touch

I’m one of those people who plays the lottery and hoping to be a winner. What makes me a little different is that even if I don’t win, I am truly excited for the person who does. So every time a Flower Shop Network‘s member wins an award or is recognized for their work, I get as excited as the flower shop owner and their staff.

Of course we really are not surprised when one of our members receives recognition. We know what dedicated and skilled professionals they are and the quality of their work. Our network coordinators really try to get to know our members (which are real local flower shops and florists) on a personal level.

In fact Shelly one of our network coordinators said shortly after David Johnson at East Sandwich Flower Shop joined our network that his flower shop had the golden touch. And now it seems that others are recognizing the talents of this East Sandwich Massachusetts florist and their golden touch as well. So when this press release about East Sandwich Flower Shop came across my desk yesterday, it made my day. The press release announced the fact that the Cape Cod Living Magazine recently awarded The East Sandwich Flower Shop a Gold Medal in customer service.

So Shelly, Flower Shop Network and I want to personally congratulate David and his staff at East Sandwich Flower Shop on receiving recognition for their outstanding customer service.

U.S. Floriculture Inspectors Confiscate Chrysanthemums From Holland

According to a recent article in SAF’s Wednesday E-Brief, U.S. Floriculture inspectors in Santa Barbara County, California confiscated and destroyed a box of cut mums from Holland. This was done as part of the ongoing effort to protect U.S. Chrysanthemum growing operations from white rust. An introduction of white rust to U.S. Chrysanthemum growing operations could cause extensive losses to the U.S. Chrysanthemum industry.

White rust is caused by the Puccinia horiana fungus which can spread quickly causing severe crop loss. Plants can harbor this pathogen for up to two weeks before the symptoms appear. This pathogen is spread through contaminated soil, litter, dead leaves, gardening equipment, clothing and hands. It does, however, need a host plant in which to grow and will not grow on anything but the host plant (chrysanthemums). If you are interested, the USDA-APHIS has more information on Chrysanthemum White Rust.

The importance of this action is the fact that cut chrysanthemums from the Netherlands are currently banned in the United States. Everyone in the floral industry should be aware that “For the time being, cut mums identified as having originated in the Netherlands will be confiscated and destroyed, WITH NO COMPENSATION” according to the March 19th SAF Wednesday E-Brief.

Growers, retailers, importers and wholesalers all play a part in the U.S. floral industry. As a result, it is essential for all the players to know and understand the implications of global trade and the issues that may arise from it. Fortunately there are many organizations, like the USDA-APHIS and SAF, that work to protect and inform floral industry members of issues that directly and indirectly affect them.

As a grower, I understand the importance of this situation and the impact that uncontrolled pathogens have on crops. Prevention is of up-most importance in terms of both financial and environmental concerns. The Bloomin’ Blog is always open to discussions concerning floral industry issues. As concerns arise we will attempt to inform the floral community and encourage discussion of these issues. I encourage you to discuss floral industry concerns here or in other floral industry communities as they arise. Communication is the key to success for all of us and for a stronger healthier industry.

The Growing Affect of Multi-Cultural Weddings

It’s not surprising that the growing popularity of multicultural and ethnic weddings leaves florists with the often daunting challenge of “thinking outside the box” for their nuptial flower arrangements. Cultural heritage affects nearly every facet of the wedding ceremony, stemming into the floral arrangements more often than expected. Brides, couples, and ethnic wedding planners are now enlisting the aid of florists to help give the bridal couple a memorable ceremony with a somewhat different meaning to the word ‘traditional.’

It is important in this ethnic wedding boom for florists to sculpt ceremonial floral arrangements and decorations around a cultural wedding theme. According to an article in the March issue of Floral Management magazine, taking the time to research the heritage and customary wedding traditions of a bride or groom may be the just the unique difference that helps guarantee the job for that couple’s wedding.

Many people wonder how different traditions affect wedding flowers. There are, in fact, many faux pas that can be avoided by researching the bridal couple’s heritage. For instance, it is customary for many Asian brides to change outfits three to five times during the ceremony. Florists may wish to alter the floral arrangements to suit the various colors of the bride’s gowns. A consideration for florists decorating a Jewish wedding ceremony is the Jewish bride’s desire for a beautiful chuppah, the wedding canopy that the couple stands beneath during the ceremony. Florists of Jewish brides will need to provide flowers for the chuppah as well as pew markers.

The first ethnic wedding for florists may seem a bit formidable but a few tips exist to make the project easier. First, be prepared to do a lot of research. Understanding the customs of the couple will help to give them the wedding of their dreams as well as the perfect floral decorations. Secondly, do not be afraid to ask questions. Remember that while some customs remain the same, each wedding ceremony celebrates an individual couple.

There are many places in which you can find information about cultural practices. In fact Wedding and Party Network has developed a Wedding Traditions resource that includes many cultural wedding traditions. They constantly update the information and even allow their readers to give input.

USA Weekend Tips For Buying Flower Online Reconizes FlowerShopNetwork.com

I spend a good majority of my time telling people about the benefits of using a real local florist; about the power of flowers and what a great gift they make; how to take care of the flowers they receive; and what flowers are appropriate for whatever occasion. Of course, I always picture people popping into their local florist to place their order or to pick up some flowers. But last Friday while I was thinking of blog ideas for this week, I made a note to discuss how to order flowers online. I thought this would be a timely blog topic since the Mothers Day holiday was fast approaching.

So Sunday when I was reading USA Weekend, there staring me in the face were the very tips I was going to discuss with all of you this week. Of course they had beaten me to the punch and done it quite well, especially since USA Weekend and Amy Stewart recognized FlowerShopNetwork.com as a authoritative place to find real local florists online.

So instead of reinventing the wheel I though I’d republish the tips written by USA Weekend on Sunday May 4th, 2008 –:
Buying flowers online

1. Check the company’s website to see how it sends the flowers. Are they in a vase or are they boxed? “Flowers sent through a local florist typically arrive professionally designed in a vase or container, ready to be displayed,” says Jennifer Sparks, vice president of marketing for the Society of American Florists. “Flowers sent through a grower or distribution center usually arrive in a box and must be set up by the recipient.”

2. Beware of “order gatherers” — companies that take orders through the Internet, pocket a commission and pass on the remaining money to a local florist to fill the order, says Amy Stewart, author of “Flower Confidential: The Good, the Bad and the Beautiful in the Business of Flowers.” “Consumers receive less than what they pay for and have little recourse for resolving problems. Order gatherers appear to be local but are based somewhere else. If in doubt, call them to find out.” If you want to buy online but still support a local business, then try FlowerShopNetwork.com or B. Brooks Fine Flowers (bbrooks.com), two online networks of local florists.

3. Select “green” flowers. Consider eco-friendly, organic, fair trade or VeriFlora-certified flowers. “Buying ‘green’ flowers is a great way to support better farming practices all over the world, and they’re priced competitively,” Stewart says. Find eco-friendly options at organicbouquet.com and www.flowerbud.com.

4. Compare prices. Find out how much will be added to the price for service charges, shipping or delivery and whether a vase is included in the price. “A good way to comparison shop is to find out how many stems you’re getting, then calculate the price per stem,” Stewart says. “Mixed bouquets and potted plants are good values, too.”

5. Read the terms. Check the company’s replacement or refund policy and freshness guarantee. Find out who will deliver the flowers — a ground carrier such as FedEx or a floral shop employee. Provide the correct delivery address where the recipient can receive the flowers directly. — Janet Reese</i>

These are some of the most helpful tips for ordering flowers online and we appreciate the nod given to our service of providing consumers with a way to contact a real local florist. Although I would have added a 6th tip.

6. Fill Out The Special Instruction Box. When ordering on line fill out the special instruction box with things like — Will be home after 3pm or their cell phone number or apartment is on the second floor. Information of this nature will help the delivery drivers find and deliver your gift in a timely fashion.

Ordering flowers online may not be as fun as popping into your local florist but the convenience factor is tremendous. If you follow these tips, your flower gift giving will seem almost effortless while the recipient will think you work hard to give them something special.
