Imagine That! Southeastern Flower Show in Atlanta Georgia.

2008 is just around the corner and with it comes a new year of flower and garden shows. Kicking off the fun filled year are the flowers in Atlanta, Georgia at the Southeastern Flower Show, starting January 30th and ending February 3rd. For more than two decades, the Southeastern Flower Show has been an inspiration to flowers lovers and garden enthusiasts alike; this year will no doubt be exceptionally inspirational with the theme: Imagine That.

The Southeastern Flower Show is an extravaganza of professionally landscaped gardens displays, floral and gardening demonstrations, speakers, family activities and a retail marketplace. During the show competitions will be held in floral design, horticulture, landscape and photography. Highlights of the 21st annual Southwestern Flower Show are the floral and gardening demonstrations, amateur and professional floral designs, and the speakers. These nationally acclaimed and local speakers will offer their expertise on landscaping, cooking, flower arranging, recycling and more.

There are many exceptional speakers and demonstrations on tap for the show. Here are a few of the ones I think would be interesting:

  • Mimi’s Mechanics by Mimi Brown, floral designer for Flower Magazine
  • Jean Stanback Brumley Memorial Lecture:”Behind the Scenes at Chelsea” by Richard Beales, Show Designer for Peter Beales Roses and designer of fifteen Gold Medal-winning gardens at Chelsea Flower Show
  • Cooking from the Garden: Chef Richard Roettgen of Via
  • Peter Loewer, author of The New Landscape: Gardening in Containers
  • “Arranging Fabulous Flowers” by Kathy Rainer and Tricky Wolfes of Parties to Die For
  • “Phenomenal Flower Arranging” by Darryl Wiseman of Darryl Wiseman Flowers
  • Celebrity Floral Arranging Competition
  • Linda Chapin, author of Field Guide to Rare Plants of Georgia

If you live in the Atlanta GA area or plan to visit the area during January 30-February 3, Check out The Southeastern Flower Show. I am sure it will be a delightful way to spend the day. I, unfortunately, will not be able to attend and must live vicariously through others. So, send me pictures and comments if you attend and I’ll post them on the blog. That way those of us who can’t attend can still enjoy the wonders of the Southeastern Flower Show.

Christmas Flower Arrangements Enjoyed By A Flower Stalker

I constantly search the Internet, magazines, hotels, restaurants and even peoples’ homes for interesting flowers and flower arrangements. I’m somewhat of a flower stalker. Lucky, no one has taken out a restraining order yet. So, when I finally had time to read the Flower Chat blog post for the last couple of weeks, I was delight to see – Local florists offer unique flower arrangements for Christmas. I am always amazed with the creative talents of florists; their ability to enhance the beauty of an already gorgeous flower; their ability to use flowers, greenery, ribbon and other materials to create a magnificent floral sculptures. The florists who submitted photos of their floral designs for the post were no exception.

I loved the Glittering Christmas Flower Arrangement Glittering Christmas arrangement from Everyday Flowers, a Tustin California florist. The use of cut limes and lemons, miniature apples, lisanthus and cymbidium orchids paired with pinecones, hypericum, eucalyptus and other Christmas greens definitely put a unique and exquisite twist to their Christmas flower arrangement.

Central Square Florist, creating flower arrangements in Cambridge Massachusetts, demonstrated the artistry of creating a “floral sculpture” with their Holiday Tree Centerpiece Holiday Tree Centerpiece Christmas Flower Arrangment. This design is a fantastic way to display a “Christmas Tree”; especially, if you lack the room for a life size one. The best part is you won’t have to decorate it.

I thoroughly enjoyed all of the Christmas flower arrangement designs submitted by all of the florists. Pictures of Christmas flower arrangements are wonderful resources for ideas and a pleasure to look at as well. Sharing design ideas is an advantage for those of us involved in the flower community. If you want to share some of your personal designs or photos of flower arrangements you have enjoyed, drop me a line.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month – How Will You Participate – A Challenge to Florists & Flower Lovers

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month.

According to the Susan G. Komen Foundation … 10 million people around the world could die from breast cancer in the next twenty-five years without the cures …

Breast Cancer is predominately a disease that affects women. However, men have been diagnosed with breast cancer. Most individuals know someone who has been diagnosed with breast cancer.

In the fight against Breast Cancer, groups have banded together to host events like Race for the Cure. Large and small corporations have given time and money to breast cancer research. Many florists and garden centers across the nation have contributed to breast cancer awareness through various activities. A florist shop in Maine supported the CURE Breast Cancer for ME event by giving breast cancer survivors a pink rose corsage with pink ribbon. A garden center in Arkansas and a local hospital promote breast cancer awareness by giving those who have a mammography done in October a pansy.

Whether you Race for the Cure or support a local breast cancer awareness group with flowers, your participation in supporting breast cancer awareness is crucial. Early detection saves lives and with breast cancer research one day we may have a cure.

With that said, I offer this challenge to florists and flower lovers everywhere:

Find a way to promote breast cancer awareness and cancer research and show a breast cancer survivor you support them.

How will I meet this challenge? First, I will give money to support breast cancer research. Second, I will give my Aunt Cathy a flower arrangement with pink gerberas (the flower meaning for gerberas is purity & strength). Third, I will schedule a mammography for myself.

My final act will be to dedicate this blog entry to Cheryl Brown who was a friend, a florist and a fighter.

I’m interested in how you meet the challenge, so let me know.

More than a Dozen Reasons to Shop at a Local Florist

I constantly advocate the use of local florists. After all, hometown flower shops are the life force of the floral industry. So when I read “A Dozen Reasons to Shop at a Local Florist” on Dirt (a blog by Amy Stewart), I was thrilled. Florists often don’t communicate their value and strengths to the consumer. Amy does a fine job in reminding florists what their value and strengths are and how they should relate them to the consumer. But this article is more than a reminder to florists. As Apartment Therapy points out it is also “… a good read for the consumer, to know what to look for and expect in a good local florists, and also know why it is good to support them.”

Here is an abbreviate version of Amy’s article

12 Reasons to Shop at a Local Florist

  1. Local florist flowers are better.
  2. Local florists take better care of their flowers.
  3. Local florists take better care of the customer.
  4. Local florists offer a money-back guarantee.
  5. Local florists can handle long distance orders.
  6. Local florists are part of the community.
  7. Local florists give back.
  8. Local florists care about the environment.
  9. Local florists go the extra mile.
  10. Local florists are artists.
  11. Local florists affordable.
  12. Local florists have more fun.

Go to Dirt for a more in-depth explanation of A Dozen Reasons to Shop at a Local Florist. Amy’s article begins on September 4th and goes through September 17th.

I would like to add another reason — making it a bakers dozen.

  1. Local florists know their flowers and their customers.

Ok, so your thinking isn’t that implied somewhere in the other reasons. Yes and No. Local florists know what is in season in their area and what is available for a special occasion. They also know the meaning of flowers. Lets say your need to convey a message such as “I have lasting affection”; your local florist knows that magenta zinnias represent lasting affection. With this in mind, they can design an arrangement with magenta zinnias as the predominate flower.

Knowing their community and their customers is a critical aspect of being a local florist. They are more than part of the community; they know the community. Local florists. with a strong Chinese community, know that red flowers are not appropriate sympathy flowers for a Chinese funeral. Florists are people who want to know who you are and because of this can provide you with better service. When I send my mother flowers, my local florist knows that she hates the color orange. As a result, they steer away from oranges when they design her arrangement.

So whether you’re a florist or a consumer, it is good to know all the reasons you should shop at a local florist.

Eco Friendly Foliage For A Green World

Everywhere I look the term eco friendly is associated with some product. Food, clothing and skin care products have all been linked to the eco friendly trend. So it didn’t surprise me when reading the August issue of Floral Management that greenery (foliage) was considered a good fit for the eco friendly lifestyle.

According to the article foliage appeals to the increased interest in an organic look and an emphasis on things representing the environment. In fact, using greenery only to create a floral arrangement is becoming a trend. The use of assorted foliage can give you the same depth and high design style as cut flowers. Greenery is actually more diverse and colorful than one would think. Foliage comes in a variety of colors dark green, medium green, gray/blue toned, green/white variegated and green/burgundy tones as well as a variety of textures.

It is interesting that a seemingly secondary player in floral design has been pushed to main player status with this eco friendly trend. I wonder how each one of us can create something that follows the eco friendly trend while fulfilling the aesthetic demands of the floral industry.

Sympathy Flowers: How Funeral Directors & Florists Work Together

I read an interesting article the other day. The article was based on suggestions from a member of the Texas State Florists’ Association after attending the Texas Funeral Directors Association convention.

When it comes to sympathy flowers, florists and funeral directors have the same goal, to help families through the bereavement process. It is well established that flowers are a comfort and joy to those during times of grief. Flowers can help both entities achieve their goal. But to achieve this goal effectively it requires a working rapport between the florist and the funeral director.

The article suggested that florists could put a brief description of the flower arrangement on the back of the enclosure card. This eases the process of writing the thank you cards and removes some of the burden from the funeral home’s staff. Families appreciate this gesture but often the funeral home staff doesn’t have the time or terminology to do this.

In return, the florist opens a line of communication with the funeral director; who can then share the importance of flowers and the quality of the local florist with the family and friends of the deceased.

A few other suggestions made were:

Florist should familiarize their delivery drivers with the funeral homes, staff members and drop off procedures.

Use standard containers that are easy to transport and set up.

Be aware of transportation constraints of the funeral homes when designing casket sprays.

These are just a few of the suggestions that can help create a rapport and line of communication between the florists and funeral directors.
I personally know how important it is to have a good rapport with the funeral home. When I worked for a local florist we had a funeral board. Our local funeral homes would call or fax us the information about services and we would list all the pertained information about the deceased on the board. When customers called to place the order we were prepared. We also kept up with delivery procedures of every funeral home. Because of our relationship with the funeral home, when family and friends inquired about where to order flowers for the services the funeral home staff would recommend us.

If you have any ideas about how to develop a rapport between florists and funeral homes please share them with us.

SAF Announces: Sales Tax Project Grants Two-Year Extension

SAF announced June 28th that an extension was granted on the sales tax issue concerning the taxation of wire services orders. Below is a copy of the article issued by SAF.

Sales Tax Project Grants Two-Year Extension

The Governing Board of the Streamlined Sales Tax Project (SSTP) voted for a two-year extension of floral rules on the taxation of wire orders at its Detroit meeting last week. This extension, which lasts until Dec. 31, 2009, was granted to allow the project time to establish long-term rules concerning the taxation of wire orders. In addition, once the long-term rules are decided it will give time for the states and the industry to prepare to implement those rules. This extension means that sales taxes will continue to be collected by the sending florist and remitted to the local taxing authority — just as it has been for many decades.

The SSTP was started eight years ago as an attempt by the states to streamline the sales tax process by agreeing to uniform definitions and rules concerning the collection of sales taxes. This is done to facilitate the eventual passage of Federal legislation that will require retailers to collect sales taxes based on the destination of the product. The change will allow the states to collect billions of dollars in sales taxes that currently are not collected on Internet and catalogue sales. This change will level the competitive field between traditional “brick and mortar” retailers and Internet sellers, as well as bring significant additional revenue to the states. In the interim, by agreeing on uniform definitions and rules, many businesses are voluntarily agreeing to collect those taxes now.

Currently 15 states are full members of the SSTP that have enacted legislation in their individual states to bring their law in compliance with the SSTP agreement. Those states are Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, New Jersey, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Vermont and West Virginia. Seven other states are associate members and are working on becoming full members. Those states are Arkansas, Nevada, Ohio, Tennessee, Utah, Wyoming and Washington.

SAF and Teleflora have been involved in the project since June 2002, working on behalf of the floral industry by attending the meetings and participating in the various committees. FTD has also participated in the effort.

For information, contact SAF’s Drew Gruenburg at dgruenburg@safnow.org.
