Orchids and Allergy Sufferers – The Perfect Arrangement

Everyone adores a fresh cut bouquet in their home or office but the sight of big blooming flowers can cause a few to be apprehensive. Seasonal allergies are to blame. The body’s immune system overreacts to airborne particles that generally fail to bother others. But with a little help from a thoughtful and skilled florist, everyone can enjoy the beauty of a fresh arrangement.

Pollen Forecast

Flowers that produce airborne pollen are the main culprits for allergies suffers, but not all flowers pollinate this way. Many, like orchids roses and tulips, rely on insects to carry pollen from bloom to bloom. In these varieties, the pollen is too heavy and large to be carried by the wind. Creating stunning arrangements with these flowers are not likely to trigger any sneezing fits.

Orchids – No Sniffles Here

Orchids produce very little pollen, come in many different vibrant colors and are the safest flower for sensitive individuals. Not sure about a particular flower? Keep in mind that the more scent present in a flower, the more pollen it contains. Think those gorgeous lilies are going to make your eyes water? Not if the pollen-covered stamen in the center of the flower is removed.

Flower Names For A Memorial Garden

Ask The Expert: “We are planning a memory garden, and have been looking for planets with their names or there names in them. It doesn’t matter about perennial or not. We live in Waco, TX, and it gets very hot here in the summers will into the 100s. The names are Jacob or Jake

Flower Shop Network Expert Reply:

Jacobs Ladder PolemoniumWhat a wonderful idea to choose specific flowers based on the names of those you are memorializing. Here are a few suggestions:

  • A rose name Jacob’s Robe. It is a Weeks Rose climber with large multi-color (yellow & peach blushing pinky red) flowers good for full sun areas.
  • A type of Polemonium known as Jacob’s Ladder.  It is an upright blue flower good for shade or part sun areas.
  • Acalypha wilkesiana known as Jacob’s Coat which is a plant with coppery-green leaves.  It is hardy only in zone 10-11.
  • Asphodelus luteus known as Jacob’s Rods. It is a perennial hardy up to zone 6 with yellow blooms and likes full sun.

With thousands of flower species and cultivars available, it’s not too hard to find the names of a loved one or friend. Creating a memory garden is a very good way to remember and stay close to the memories of the departed. You might also choose flowers for your garden based on flower meanings that may be appropriate.

Spotlight on Solidago AKA Golden Rod

SolidagoOn a recent road trip, I couldn’t help but notice the colors of fall already starting to show. One fall flower that really caught my attention was the golden rod or, as most florists call it, solidago. Our Arkansas landscape is currently covered in this bright yellow flower. We aren’t the only ones who enjoy seeing solidago on the horizon, this flower has been adopted as the state flower by Nebraska and Kentucky as well as the state wildflower for South Carolina. While solidago is considered a wildflower or even weed by those in North America, it is actually a favorite garden flower in Europe.

Golden Rod Allergy Myth

Many people shy away from this particular flower because of it’s bad reputation of causing hay fever and other allergies, but actually ragweed is the culprit with a similar blooming time to solidago (golden rod). Actually the pollen of solidago is too heavy to be wind-pollinated and must be carried by insects from plant to plant. Handling solidago may still cause problems to those with allergies, however.

Use In Floral Design

Did you know golden rods (solidago) are a common filler flower used by florists? That’s right, in many designs florists use a hybrid version of the common golden rod to add bright yellow color and interest to a flower arrangement. They have been hybridized to bring out all the best qualities of solidago.  This fall-bloomer is a great addition to your seasonal decor.

Here are a few favorite flower arrangements that feature solidago from our Flower Gallery:

Every Star Deserves Flowers!

Ask the Expert:
I am attending a local play that a girlfriend is acting in. Thinking I should bring flowers but not sure what is appropriate. Please let me know Thanks! Susan

Flower Shop Network Expert Reply:
Flowers are a lovely gesture for any occasion. In fact, flowers and the theater have a very long history. Single stem roses were often thrown on stage at the end of a performance. The lead actress would pick these flowers up as she took her bows. So, it is perfectably acceptable to give someone flowers who is performing in a play.

Hand-tied flower bouquets are the beat flower choice for the theater. Depending on the situation and the recipient, you could give the actress a hand-tied bouquet of roses or mixed flowers after the performance.

If you want to send something prior to the performance, a vase arrangement would be the best choice. Your local florist can help you decide which type of arrangement is the best choice for your actress based on the theater.

This flower giving tip was brought to you by New York Florists who deliver flowers to the theater district on a daily basis.

Flowers Are The Best Way To Say I’m Sorry

I'm Sorry FlowersIt summer and it is hot. So, a relaxing day by the pool is just what my niece (Jordon) needed while studying for her nurse practitioner exam. Lucky for her, she has an aunt and uncle with a pool who are willing to let her use it on a hot summer day. So what does this all have to do with sending flowers?

Everyone has had one of those days when relaxing becomes stressful.  Who knew a simple lunch invitation would turn into a fender bender?

While relaxing and studying, Christen (a friend of Jordon’s) stopped by and invited her to lunch. They jumped in his car and proceeded down the drive-way.  Unfortunately a neighbor parked their car right behind the driveway and Christen backed right into it.

The tranquility of the day was completely erased in a matter of minutes. Thinking we would be upset, Jordon became very distressed. Seeing Jordon and the neighbor upset and thinking we would be mad, Christen became overwrought and embarrassed.

After exchanging insurance information with the neighbor, Jordon and Christen went to lunch. The conversation at lunch was virtually non-existent except for Christen’s constant apology. Although Jordon excepted his apologies, her moody was very gloomy. Instead of going back to the pool after lunch, Jordon went home to study and Christen went on his way.

A couple of hours later, Christen was on Jordon’s doorstep with a bouquet of flowers and a nice bottle of wine.  Suddenly the cloud lifted and his apology was accepted with a smile and a hug.

Anyone can say they are sorry, but when you say it with flowers it means so much more. Everyone makes mistakes. Just remember when you make a mistake and need to say you are sorry,  flowers will make them smile and forget all about it.

By the way Christen, where are my flowers? Oh yeah, neighbor would like some too.
