Flowers From Generation To Generation

When it comes to flowers it doesn’t really matter how old you are or where you’re from because people enjoy receiving flowers as well as sending them. Did you know that flowers can have a true emotional meaning behind them? They’re just not a pretty flower or simple gift; with the right flower you can send feeling and emotions to your loved ones. From a simple “I love you” to a very special “happy birthday”, flowers are an overall perfect gift which is the number one reason thousands of flowers are sent every day around the world.

As a 17 year old, my generation thinks about flowers differently than older generations. To us, flowers signify an easy way to make someone else smile. For example, on Valentine’s Day, every teenage boy knows to send their girlfriends flowers. Not only because its an easy gift to get, but they know flowers are the ideal Valentine’s Day gift. Most guys know that flowers make any girl happy and cheerful, especially roses on this specific day. They also realize that roses are a flower that symbolize an ”I love you”. So whether you’re from the younger or older generation, everyone knows that the meaning behind a rose is ”I love you”.

On the other hand an older generation, like our parents, thinks about flowers in a more passionate and sentimental way. A man from this older generation puts a great deal of thought into the flowers he sends his wife. He thinks about the emotion he wants to convey with the flowers he is sending. For the older generations the message you convey with flowers is a significant part of sending flowers. To my generation a gift of flowers might be remembered for about a couple of weeks. To the older generations it’s something they will remember for the rest of their life; making them smile every time they think about the special gift they received.

My generation focuses on flowers more around April or May, which is prom season. An outfit wouldn’t be complete without a dazzling corsage. On the other hand, for the older generation any day of the year is the right time to think about and send flowers. When they’re trying to send a sympathetic message or just make someone smile, waiting for a holiday to come around isn’t the only option when it comes to sending flowers. In retrospect, flowers are sent by all generations all throughout the year. They are just sent with a different meaning an in a different approach each time. Maybe my generation should start sending flowers a little more often.

Sending Flowers? Don’t Forget To List Your Second Choice

This is one flower sending tip that you won’t want to be without. Florists run across an issue often when they are asked to create an arrangement based on something seen in a magazine, on a floral website, or a wire service design gallery. Because availability varies by region and other factors, it is important to have your second choice in mind when ordering flowers.

Small Changes, Not A Different Flower Arrangement

Having a second choice is not what it seems to be. This does not mean giving up what you want in favor of a completely different arrangement. This can be something as simple as selecting pink roses if red roses are not available. It could also mean selecting a different type of flower that closely resembles one used in the bouquet.

Keep Color Options In Mind

Most flowers come in a variety of colors. Each variegated species has its own unique appearance. Though you do not have to know the species name of each flower, keep in mind which colors you would like to see in the arrangement. Note this when sending flowers through a local florist. Knowing that green and yellow are preferred (or whichever) is very helpful information when floral designers need to make substitutes.

Keep Flower Substitutes In Mind

Is your wife highly allergic to a particular flower? Does your husband love a certain flower? Let your florist know! He or she will better able to tailor your arrangement to your specific needs if s/he knows which flowers are preferred/off limits/acceptable. Also, note whether substitutions will be acceptable if the flowers are not available. It may be something as simple as filler flower changes, but it will get your flowers out the door faster and spare a lot of people the hassle of multiple phone calls.

Know Someone Needing A Boost? Send These Flowers

Flower Meanings of Hydrangea & Stargazer Lilies

"Glorious Magenta" Hydrangeas & Peonies

"Glorious Magenta" Hydrangeas & Peonies

Many trials face us in life, but thankfully we have friends and family to encourage us through them. I know from personal experience what it is like to need encouragement or a dose of happy but have nowhere to turn. It’s remember these moments that make me love the flower meanings of stargazer lilies and hydrangeas. These are the absolute perfect gifts for someone needing a boost.

The hydrangea flower meaning is “perseverance.” Know someone struggling to get through their next big trial? Perhaps it’s something as simple as passing a difficult exam or getting through the night at a job that they dislike. Maybe your loved one was recently given a poor diagnosis at their physical exam. Whatever the issue, these times call for encouragement. If we can’t get it from friends, where can we turn? When you know someone facing a situation that calls for perseverance, embolden them with the gift of hydrangeas.

Stargazer lilies also have a particular flower meaning that caught my eye. These lovely flowers mean “ambition.” The drive to succeed is inbred within all of us. We all want to make more of our lives than futility. Someone facing a situation that calls for them to use their ambition will appreciate the flower meaning of sunflowers.

Perhaps you have a friend that is moving to another city for the first time. Maybe a friend is starting college or a new job. These are excellent opportunities to share in the richness of ambition. Send flower arrangements with stargazer lilies and watch the richness unfold.

Sending Flowers To Someone In The ICU?

Try "Flower Garden" Or Other Get Well Flowers

Try "Flower Garden" Or Other Get Well Flowers

I remember when my best friend’s mother was having brain surgery. Over the course of 6 months she had 5 surgeries to repair her brain stem which sat too low. Tabby, myself, and our mutual friends all view Mrs. Vickie as a mother so we spent countless hours in the ICU waiting room at our local hospital in Jonesboro, AR.

The staff was great but there is little that makes the waiting room experience pleasant. After hours waiting for the surgeon to call, the time seems to pass like molasses. You know what would’ve made that experience better? Well, not having to do it (especially 5 times) for one. Aside from that though, flowers.

It’s never fun to need to send flowers to someone in the hospital. However, it brightens their day. Studies have shown that someone happier also heals faster. Whether it’s on the enclosure card or not, you really are “wishing a speedy recovery” when you send flowers to someone in the hospital.

There is one hiccup.

Patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) are not allowed to receive flowers. Once they are moved to a room, fine and dandy. When in the ICU, hospital flowers are a no-go. Don’t feel like you have to give up though. Sending flowers expresses a great sentiment which can be enjoyed by the person’s family and friend in the ICU waiting room. I know it would’ve helped us. We felt like we were the only ones in the world that knew or cared about what was happening. Receiving hospital flowers reminds those waiting that someone else is thinking, praying and caring at the same time.

Ever go through something like this? Did you receive flowers while you were waiting? Have you sent flowers to a hospital and received a good response? Please share your stories with us.

Stuck Inside All Winter? Celebrate Spring With Gardenias!

It’s no secret that being inside all winter can be a bummer. Sometimes winter weather isn’t as fun as it could be. Well, good news! Spring is in full affect now. I’m sure you’re dying to know how I plan on celebrating it. I know I would be if I were you. (Just kidding.) I’m celebrating with gardenias.

Why gardenias you ask? The flower meaning of gardenias is “joy.” Pure and simple. Joy is one of the most wonderful feelings ever. Anyone who has ever felt a second of joy knows that it’s a feeling to be craved and sought. I want to surround myself with joy and joyous people. Now that winter has gone into hibernation and spring has sprung, it’s time to kick off my joyful shoes so I’m buying potted gardenias from my local florist!

Flowering plants are well and good (I love them!!) but sometimes it’s more fun to send flowers to put a spring in the step of a friend. When you want to celebrate spring with your buddies, consider sending flowers such as casablanca lilies. This the meaning of this premium flower is “celebration.” Perfect!! Perhaps you’re wanting something more festive. Believe it or not, “festivity” abounds with baby’s breath. There are many arrangements that incorporate these flowers. Happy International Woman’s Day!!!

That’s right. Sunday is International Woman’s Day 2009. I didn’t know much about it until last year when I was talking with a friend who had received flowers for this holiday. The conversation was less than enlightening and went something like this.

  • Me:  Oh cool flowers. What’s the occasion?
  • Her:  Thanks. International Woman’s Day.
  • Me:  What??
  • Her:  International Woman’s Day. It’s pretty awesome.
  • Me:  What is it?
  • Her:  *Blah blah blah* Google it.

Anyway, I took her advice and got some pretty good information. Check it out! International Woman’s Day has been around since the early 1900s. Can you imagine celebrating something like this when women weren’t allowed to vote? This was a severely restricted time for women. That took a lot of guts! Sometimes I just want to hug the women that came before us and tell them thanks for making it possible for us to be who we are.

IWD has been celebrated on March 8th of every year since 1913. That happens to fall on a Sunday this year so I recommend sending flowers a day or two early. After all, it’s the thought that counts. Even better, it’s a wonderful gesture to receive flowers from a sorority sister, secret sister or secret pal, husband, best friend or relative.

To celebrate together is an amazing thing. To stand up and acknowledge the things that our ancestors have done is incredible. To sit down together and enjoy being able to work normal hours for nearly identical pay is another thing for which to be thankful. Much in the minority among other women, I’m a bit of a chauvinist who tends to side with men. I’ll admit it. Even the ladies that fall into this group can’t help but appreciate the rights that we have thanks to brave women that preceded us.

Know a lady that exudes quality? Perhaps it’s her bravery or courage that make her stand out. Perhaps she’s the sweetest little old church lady that ever existed. Whatever this woman is/did/does to make you love her, acknowledge that with the gift of flowers for International Woman’s Day. Why not? Maybe the compliment will be returned to you one day when someone falls in love with every wonderful quality that you possess.

Get your bragging shoes on. We want to hear your stories about the women in your life that have made it possible for you to be who you are. Who are you celebrating on International Woman’s Day? Even if you’re celebrating you, share your stories with us here.

Taking A Romantic Trip? Don’t Forget The Flowers!

It’s actually pretty common to take a romantic vacation for an anniversary but forget to pick up contact information for the local florists. However, Flower Shop Network is your help away from home when you find yourself in this situation.

Picture it. You find a luxury hotel resort and book a room. You step inside the doorway with your sweetheart and everything is gorgeous but one thing is missing — the flowers. Something just seems off, perhaps even a bit bleak compared to what you were expecting.

Now picture this scenario but imagine the room filled with fragrant flowers instead. Rose petals strewn across the bed and around a jacuzzi instantly stand out. A beautiful arrangement of anniversary flowers resides on a table next to the anniversary gift that you know will be a hit.

All of these and many other creative options are available thanks to a local florist. They are the away from home contacts that every romantic traveler needs to have. This is where Flower Shop Network makes it easy for you to quickly and easily find a florist in your area.

It is also helpful to ask that florist to contact the hotel management with ideas for decorating the hotel room. For instance, the florist and management can team up to create a fabulous atmosphere that really stands out. When your sweetheart enters the room, the first sights are of the rose petals strewn across the bed, flowers on the nightstand, candles and gifts surrounding the jacuzzi, and a scented gift basket resting in the counter for a soothing bath or massage. Such a romantic atmosphere awaits the two of you just thanks to the partnership between you, a local florist and the hotel manager.

It’s really that easy to design an impressive evening! Make the evening as perfect as possible. When this requires flowers (and it always does), be prepared thanks to help from a local florist.

You Can Now Have Valentines Day Flowers With A Great Message

Flowers sent on Valentine’s Day should express the feelings of the sender. Did you know that the Victorian Era gave each flower a special meaning? Florists can creatively arrange a bouquet of flowers using these meanings in order to convey a special message. But that’s only good if the flowers are delivered to someone who understands the flower meaning of each flower in the bouquet. What’s tricky is that flowers can have more than one meaning (sometimes a positive one and a negative one). If the person sending flowers has a different perspective than the person who receives the flower arrangement, interpretation becomes a risky proposition. It is of utmost importance that the message is not lost in the translation. That’s where florists come to the rescue.

Local florists understand this predicament and are willing to help. Every flower arrangement, delivered by a florist, includes an enclosure card that states who sent the flowers along with flower delivery information. But enclosures cards are more than that; they give you the opportunity to send a special message to the recipient. Since we are not all blessed with a poetic voice or even the gift of gab, I asked several florists what they thought were good Valentines Day Card Messages.

Florists Voted These As The Top 40 Valentines Day Cards Messages:

So What’s A Good Gift For That Other December Holiday?

Happy Hanukkah Bouquet

Happy Hanukkah Bouquet

Well, there are several December holidays that come to mind. Christmas, Kwanzaa, and Hanukkah take the lead in my mind. Hanukkah (Chanukah) and Kwanzaa are major holidays that are very understated and tend to take a backseat to Christmas. However, these are very popular holidays that merit the same kindred spirit and celebration.

But what do you do when you need to give a gift for these holidays but you’ve never celebrated them? Well, there are a couple of ideas. First, hide under your Christmas tree and hope that everyone forgets about giving gifts this year. When that fails, call your local florist.

Hanukkah bouquets are all the rage this year. Flowers are very traditional and fit the bill for every occasion. However, Hanukkah is that special Jewish tradition that is celebrated for eight (8) days. While a new floral gift each day may not be exactly right for you, marking one of those days with a colorful Hanukkah flower arrangement is a great way to spend the holiday.

Ruby Red Regalia Bouquet

Ruby Red Regalia Bouquet

But what about Kwanzaa? Kwanzaa isn’t as lengthy a celebration and is in no way Jewish. This African holiday is neither political nor religious. It’s not a substitute for Christmas. It does however inspire African Americans to reflect on the values of traditional African families. So what goes along with that? You guessed it. Flowers.

However, ask your local florist to make this Kwanzaa bouquet a bit more special. Red black and green ribbons wrapped around an red black and green arrangement is a neat idea. Another good gift idea is to send a pretty vase arrangement with a sweet card. It never fails to inspire and it lets the recipient know that you care.

So you see, it doesn’t matter much whether you celebrate these holidays or not. Sometimes doing a little research is fun too. Sending a unique gift along with a colorful arrangement of flowers is a great way to show your friends or loved ones just how valued you consider them.

The Perfect Last Minute Christmas Gift Idea

Alright. It’s the middle of December and you still haven’t managed to cross everyone off of your Christmas gift list. No worries! Just like always, your local florist is available to help you out of this holiday haze. Flowers are traditional and classic but can be updated to fit into any contemporary decor. It’s the perfect Christmas gift idea!

Let’s face it. A week before Christmas leaves zero time for hitting the stores plus gift wrapping and holiday parties. Though we should probably all be given a super-hero moniker, it’s just an easier holiday on everyone if we’re able to enjoy it without rushing around in a panic looking for gifts. Slow down, take a deep breath, and call your local florist. Believe me. The good people at your local flower shop are trained experts in dealing with the holiday rush. You’re in good hands when you choose to send flowers to friends and family.
