It’s Fathers Day and Dad is ready to be shown the love!

June is the month to celebrate fathers and all they do. It’s an opportunity to show them how grateful we are for every bike they fixed and every toy they put together on Christmas morning. It’s a chance to say, “Thanks, Dad, for always being there when I needed a helping hand.” And what better way to show Dad you love him than a gorgeous arrangement or vibrant plant? So give Dad some heartfelt gratitude this year. Give him flowers.

15 Hot Summer Flowers

Summer begins Saturday June 21st. If you enjoy having seasonal blooms on your table or in your home, check out this list of some of the most popular summer flowers available June through August. Your florist may not have all of these on-hand every day, but they should be available if you give her a couple days notice.

Sensational Summer Flowers

Begonia – These are beautiful flowers that come in large variety of colors. They are native to tropical climates, but can be grown in colder regions of the world during the summer months. This flower traditionally means, beware or be cautious. Sound advice if you are planning on giving these flowers as a gift to your significant other.
Chrysanthemum – These flowers have a long and storied history dating back to before the 15th Century BCE. So if you’re looking for blooms with a little gravitas, these are the flowers for you. They traditionally mean joy or optimism.
Orchid – These delicate blooms represent love, luxury, beauty and strength. They have long been coveted flowers because of their fragile beauty and long lives.
Gardenia – The perfect choice for the secret admirer or the smitten would-be lover. This flower traditionally means secret love and is a wonderful way to let someone know you’re thinking of them.

Hyacinth – A wonderful flower for professing your devotion, the hyacinth traditionally means constancy. Its name comes from an unsurprisingly tragic tale from Greek Mythology, but then what Greek Myth doesn’t end in tragedy?
Hydrangea – These make a wonderful gift to give after you’ve had a sincere apology accepted. The traditional meaning of hydrangea is heartfelt emotion and gratitude for being understood.
Iris – The iris is another flower whose name hails from the Greeks. It stands for faith, hope, wisdom, courage and admiration.
Lily – The lily may be a flower that has grown alongside mankind as long as there has been a thing such as mankind. As such, it has many different meanings depending on the culture you’re coming from. For detailed information on the lily, check out our April Flower Spotlight!
Lilac – Oh, those flower loving Greeks, they named another one! It should come as no surprise that so many summer flowers have names that come from the Greek isles. After all, the Mediterranean climate is sort of … summery. The lilac is perfect as a gift from a student to a teacher or from you to your child as the flower traditionally means youthful innocence.
Magnolia – The magnolia tree is a common site throughout most of the South during the summer. It is a gorgeous white blossom that means splendid beauty and dignity and is perfect for that singular love of your life.
Marigold – The marigold is a gorgeous flower that comes in bright, vibrant oranges and reds. It should then come as no surprise that it traditionally means passion and creativity. This makes it the perfect gift for that relationship in the heat of its life.

Poppy – The poppy has a gorgeous bloom and means beauty, magic, consolation, fertility and eternal life. It makes a good gift for many different situations, and its versatility makes it popular.
Rose – I’m sure you’re more than familiar with this extremely popular flower, but it is a summer flower and it’s popularity makes it impossible to leave off this list. Summer is definitely the season for flowers, and as always, the best place to get those flowers is from your local florist. Don’t neglect yourself this warm summer season, buy some flowers for you or a loved one and enjoy the best that nature has to offer!

Picnic Time: Take Time to Smell the Roses

As we grow older, our summers are no longer long days in the sun, and we tend to hope that time will slow down. Now that our youthful days of running around, picking flowers and rope swings by the lake aren’t what they used to be, it’s time to relive these memories by arranging a picnic.

Plan a Pop-up Picnic!

Work and school is stressful, but if there is still some sun left in the day, why not enjoy it?

Plan a surprise date under a shady tree. Picnics combine our favorite things all in one: food, beautiful weather and conversation. You could even surprise your friends with a pop-up picnic! Who doesn’t love a surprise? This is especially good for a quick, yet romantic date. There are several ways to plan a picnic, but for those who are picnic planning-impaired I have a checklist prepared for you.

Bring a blanket. Make sure the blanket isn’t very important to you; grass stains can ruin grandmother’s quilt. Make sure the blanket does not have a fluffy texture. Grass, mud, bugs and other, outside items stick to the texture. It is unreasonably hard to wash. The best bet is to go with an old quit.
Plan favorite foods. This date is a great way to show how well you pay attention to details. Bring fresh fruit, sandwiches and drinks. P.S. Don’t forget napkins and utensils.
A quiet, shady place. The less noisy the environment is, the more conversation. This is the perfect time to let your personality shine through.
Picnic flowers. Flowers will make a beautiful centerpiece, this extra touch will lead to even more brownie points.

For an extra special touch, surprise your significant other with flowers at work with an invitation to a surprise dinner after work. She will be so surprised by the romantic gesture, the picnic will be easy to keep hidden.

Brighter Than the Sun – Sunflowers That Will Take Your Breath Away

Living with four sorority girls that are in serious relationships can lead to many “When I get married…” conversations. While discussing our dream wedding dream wedding plans, I asked “When would y’all want to get married?” Of course, we all had some idea, but one roommate had only one thing planned — her flowers. “I just want sunflowers, so my wedding will be planned around their season. My fiancé will just have to understand.” I’m sure he will.

Planning A Wedding With Sunflowers

Sunflowers are typically warm-weather bloomers. If you are in the same boat as my roommate, it’s best to plan your wedding between May and October. Although most florists are able to order sunflowers year round, they are usually much more affordable when they’re used in season. Sunflowers have a long season which allows the flowers to be used for summer and fall weddings. The sunflower is the perfect statement piece, and the placement is all up to the bride. Sunflowers are great for bouquets, arches or center piece. With so many placement options, they make flower planning a breeze.

Did I mention sunflowers look great in different themed weddings?

Planning a wedding can be (and most likely is) a difficult task, but why? My theory is that, as women, we want it all. I want a country wedding, but then I also want a beach wedding. It only happens once, and it’s hard to choose. Sunflowers can be used in many different themes, such as: southern rustic charm, country elegant weddings, beach weddings and outdoor weddings.

How Florists Keep Flowers Cool During The Heat

Wooo! It’s a scorcher out there, and it’s only going to get worse! I don’t know about you, but I can barely keep my lawn alive during this heat, and flowers — forget about it! So how is it florists keep such beautiful flowers all year long, even Sun - Heating Things up for Florists on deliveries?! Here are some tips our florists shared with us yesterday.

Tips For Keeping Flowers Cool In The Heat

Make sure the A/C in your delivery vehicle is in good shape and prepared for summer.
Make sure the delivery vehicle is cooled off before loading. – via Lisa from West End Florist, Rome GA
Invest in a spare key so you can leave the car running while making other deliveries. – via Emily from The Enchanted Florist, Asheville NC
Check newly arrived flowers for improper temperatures.
Immediately prep and refrigerate newly arrived flowers.
Try not to move flowers in and out of the cooler while designing.
Make sure the temperature of your cooler is adjusted properly for your flowers.
Choose lighter colored delivery vehicles to help keep them cool.

Flowers and plants need to be kept at a certain temperature in order to breath and intake food properly. Keeping flowers at a consistent temperature is vital for reaching a it’s full vase-life potential. Low temperatures also slow down the growth of bacteria and other micro-organisms, which will extend the vase life for customers.

Before a flower arrives at your local flower shop, it has made a long journey. Starting with the growers, they are shipped in refrigerated planes or trucks to the wholesale level. Wholesalers keep these flowers in coolers until they are shipped to the florist, who also stores them inside a cooler. After all this refrigeration, you can see why flowers would get finicky once they are out of the cool. Florists do their best to maintain the right temperatures for their flowers.
