Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women and is claiming the lives of 40,000 women each year in the United States alone. These numbers are staggering and show the need for change. October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and there are many things you can personally do to join the fight.
What You Can Do
Encouragement
Do you now someone that has been diagnosed with breast cancer? The physical and emotional tolls are overwhelming. You could be a beacon of hope in their time of need. A simple expression of your love and support could make a huge difference in their life. This month is also a difficult time for family members that have lost a loved one to breast cancer. Send flowers as a gift of encouragement to people you know that have been diagnosed or family members that have experienced a tragedy. Even though it might not seem like much, your kind gesture will be greatly appreciated. Here are some beautiful flower arrangements that you can order from your local florist.
Promote Early Detection
The National Breast Cancer Foundation states that the best way to fight breast cancer is to have a plan that helps detect the disease in its early stages. Download the Early Detection Plan app on your phone to receive reminders to do breast self-exams, and schedule your clinical breast exams and mammograms based on your age and health history. Promote the app to your friends, coworkers, family members, and on social media. Explain to your loved ones the importance of early detection and how they can fight against breast cancer.
