Halloween History

Halloween evolved from a Celtic festival called Samhain (sow-in). This festival was celebrated on the last day of the Celtic year (Oct 31); a day in which they believed the world of the living and dead becomes blurred.  The festival consisted of huge bonfires where crops were burned along with animal sacrifices. Festival participants wore animals’ heads and animal skin costumes, while attempting to tell each other’s fortunes.

 After 400 years of Roman occupation, two Roman festivals (Feralia Festival to commemorate the Dead and The Festival honoring Pomona (the Roman goddess of fruit & trees) were combined with the Celtic festival.  In fact, this is probably where bobbing for apples on Halloween originated. 

 By the 800’s, the spread of Christianity had gained influence in Celtic lands.  In fact, Pope Boniface IV, maybe as an attempt to replace the Celtic festival, designated November 1^st as All Saints Day. This day was referred to as All-Hallows, and the night before as All-Hallows Eve.

Trick or treating was introduced to the celebration of Halloween in the 1920’s.  Some say in a response to vandalism.  Candy was used to bribe children to behave.  Over the years, Halloween has evolved from a pagan festival, to a Christian observance, to the multi-million dollar industry and carefree holiday it is today.  Celebrating Halloween involves a variety of Halloween decorations, like skeletons, pumpkins, black cats, flower arrangements and witches.  Although Halloween decorations, set the mood for the celebration it is the food that attracts the celebrants.  Carmel apples, candy corn, popcorn balls and cupcakes are just a few of the delectable treats found on Halloween.
