How Do We Honor Memorial Day
When most of us think about Memorial Day, the only thought that crosses our mind is “Three Day Weekend”, however this national holiday was established for more than just to give you an extra day at the lake. Memorial Day was first enacted to honor Union soldiers who fought in the American Civil War but was later expanded after World War I to include all American casualties of any war or military action. During the observance of Memorial Day, loved ones are reminded of these men and women who fought for our country.
Memorial Day is not a typical gift giving holiday, although there are some very neat ways to show appreciation to those who have fought for our country on this day. Most families take this holiday as an opportunity to replace flowers on the grave site. New, fresh, and vibrant colors of silk flowers bring life and happiness to a holiday that has the potential to be saddened by memory. Others such as friends or distant family members have taken the opportunity on Memorial Day to remember those soldiers’ parents or immediate family. Sending the family a food or fruit basket packaged in patriotic theme or a fresh flower table centerpiece using red, white, and blue flowers are fantastic and easy ways show appreciation and remembrance of he or she who died for our country.
Don’t have a loved one or family member that you know personally who has served for our country but still want to show appreciation? Take that “Three Day Weekend” on May 25th, 2009 and visit a national memorial to honor those soldiers who have died over the years protecting our nation.
