Saint Valentine: The Quintessential Romantic 

Valentine's Day is the most romantic day of the year. We shower our loved ones with all things romantic --- flowers, chocolate, champagne, candles, perfume. We steal away our loved one for a romantic candlelight dinner at the best restaurant in town. Or we may even whisk them away for an overnight getaway.  We may even scatter the bed with fragrant rose petals and light hundreds of candles to create a romantic scene. Even pizza by candlelight is romantic on this holiday! No matter what we do to show our love, it's all in the spirit of Saint Valentine.

Saint Valentine was one of the most popular saints in all of England and France by the Middle Ages. According to legend, Valentine's Day history began when a man named Valentine was imprisoned for helping Christians escape Roman prisons where they were beaten and tortured. While there, he fell in love with a young woman who visited him, and sent the first "valentine." Before his death, he wrote her a letter and signed it "from your Valentine."  His example of heroism and romanticism fuels the passion of Valentine's Day even to the 21st century.

While any gift  given with love is an appropriate Valentine's Day gift, nothing says "I love you" like flowers--red roses in particular.  The deep crimson, the unmistakable fragrance, and the velvety smooth petals speak of undying love and devotion. When paired with chocolates, it's a combination that will melt any loved one's heart. Even on a budget, a single red rose speaks volumes and is a most romantic gesture, especially when accompanied with a note or card expressing your love. Whatever Valentine's Day gifts you choose, if you give from the heart they will convey your heartfelt love and care--just as Saint Valentine's simple love note did centuries ago.
